Default Electric Engine Fan running constantly when parked!

Hi,

Anyone has a problem with the electric thermo fan staying on for a long time after the car has been switched off? I parked the car last night about 10pm and this morning at 10am the fan was still running.

Checked with an MB technical representative, and this is a known problem in some cars where the control module is affected by moisture, due to it's location within the bumper. Doesn't look like the xfire has the unit located there, so not sure if it is the same issue.

It's going to send my battery flat! Argh!

I tried disconnecting the fan at the first available connector, and reseating it, which made no difference. Fan started again as soon as I reconnected it. Cable runs over to what looks like a control unit, which is bone dry.

Help! Going to call the dealer tomorrow.

Scott,

There is a mechanism where the fan stays on to keep the heater on. I don't know whether you have accidentally activitated it.

Check out the operation in the Owners manual.

Otherwise, it sounds like you have a fault.

Checked that. Made sure it was disabled. Still no change, although today is sunny and dry so let's see if the problem goes away.

I will have a look in the 3000 page Manual tonight and see if there is an entry for this.

Scott,

The Operating Manual has a section on this 7.6. The reasons for the fan staying on are:

RADIATOR FAN CONTROL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO GROUND
RADIATOR FAN CONTROL MODULE
A/C SWITCH CIRCUIT MALFUNCTION
POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE

I couldn't find a way to get the stuff/diagrams out of PDF easily.

I think Saldous has managed to post the details somewhere on the forum. Drop him a PM. If he hasn't he can send you a copy of the manual on CD.

If you let me have your address, I can always post you a copy, or if you are near Staines, then you can pick one up.

Thanks Bob!

I really appreciate your effort to help me find out about it. Spoke with Lancaster's today and they are concerned and advised me to get to a DC dealer ASAP to have the disagnostics module connected for tests.

Will try to get back to Lancasters (or another dealer in Romford) for it this week.

Parked today at 4:30pm, and the fan was still running (and squeaking!) at 10:00pm. Turned the car on, then off, then to acc, then off and the fan stopped.

Weird.

Thanks for the tip on the Romford dealer. Looks like I'll drive the extra miles and take it back to the boys at Lancasters. They've been excellent over the phone so far.

Back to the dealer today:

1. Fan won't turn off, and it's squeaky.
2. Car has jumped out of gear 3 times.
3. Stereo locked up on me and had to pull the fuse.
4. Clutch throwout bearing is noisy

>1. Fan won't turn off, and it's squeaky.

Fan control unit replaced on the spot - problem gone

>2. Car has jumped out of gear 3 times.

Car is not from the affected batch, asked DC for advice, likely perform the TSB work.

>3. Stereo locked up on me and had to pull the fuse.

Some CDRs cause the unit to boot wrong, likely cause. Fair enough.

>4. Clutch throwout bearing is noisy

Will be replaced when the gearbox work is done.

At least the Fan Fault was correctly included in the XF Manual.

Mine has jumped out of gear a few times but not in the last 1000 miles. My XF was not in the affected batch - would be keen to hear what DC say about your problem.

I had the stereo lockup on me too, with CDR's in use. I just turned the ignition off and on, and it worked ok.

My CF tech told me he has replaced several "freaked out" radios, so he installed a new one for me, "before you have any problems."

I think I must have the best dealer and service tech on the planet, they treat me like I'm Mr. daimler/Chrysler!
