engine light comes on! solved it for a while?
Hi more or less since I bought the car. The engine warning light intermittedly came on then about 9months later it stayed on... for about 3 months but drive perfectly. Then went out for a week or so then on... ya get the idea...
Google the problem and done me head in with all the possibilities it could be...
Started putting the super unleaded in for a while seemed to be better, but costly
Some days to go to work is 120mile round trip!
A friend suggested BGT22 engine enhancer/cat cleaner used 1 tin of that, the car ran smoother but light still on now n then about 2 weeks later put bottle of cataclean in.
About 3 weeks later no engine warning light at all, problem seemed solved..... yeay
5 months on warning light starts. To stay on when it likes to. So ordered the cataclean
Again, picked this 1 instead of the bgt22 because it is very sticky (more chance to stick to the catalytic converter sensor.
Is this a common fault on crossfires or have I got bigger problems!!!
Bought from amazon £15 ish.
My last car failed mot due ro engine warning light being on.
Had it checked at main dealer... have me a estimate of £2200 + vat for new obc & catalytic converter they said was damaged because of computer malfunction.....
So ended up scrapping it, due to the fact the car was only worth about £2400...
Wish I had tried a cat cleaner 1st.

Hi robby, I didn't get the crossfire checked in the garage, just tried to figure out what was causing
Light to come on. Partly because I think most garages will try n stitch you up when it comes to electrical
& diagnostics. So no code sorry mate..
Just cured it with the cat cleaner.
It was the car I had before that I put into the dealer to be checked (Toyota avenues )
But they did not give me a code on ant paper work just what they estimated to replace.
Sorry robby not a lot of help on the code

Purchase your own code reader and see what is in the history. Note all the codes on paper, then clear all codes. Next time light comes on, check for active code.
Driving with the CEL on is not a good idea long term. When light is on, system is in 'open loop' which sets ECM to default program. When in default, you are not getting maximum fuel mileage and getting poor emissions.

I'm with James - my Ultragauge was only $80 US. Not only does it read the codes easily, but it's fun to have it plugged in, I like watching the engine reading change!
But let me be sure I understand - you drove the car with the light on, and continued to buy cheap gas when you knew better gas helped?
And as to the 'other car', if you drove it a long time with the light on, I'd guess the damage done was likely due to poor maintenance. I know the light can be irritating, but it is there for a REASON.
Recently, I kept getting a light and P0400, replaced the EGR valve assembly and all is good. Of course, over here, I can't get a new annual tag with the light on, so I'd need to fix it by spring anyway. I had it fixed just because that is what you do when the light comes on!

I presume you stick this stuff in the gas tank, so it gets diluted then burnt and still stays sticky, amazing stuff.

As said before, get the codes read, report back and do a thorough job of solving the problem. From what I see you have solved nothing if the light keeps coming on. You may be making things worse, your last car was scrapped after you took the word of a mechanic and it may have been
easily fixed. Use this forum to save some money and headaches.
Hi James1549
Thanks for the info, will look into getting a code reader, I am in UK so may nor be as easy to obtain. There
Is nor a great dell of crossfires over here.
I was advised by a dealer that if the engine is having serious problems it would go. Into limp mode ( open loop mode as you. would say )
But he said if I can drive over 3500 rev and still accelerate as normal there's probably a minor problem... causing the light.
Thanks for the heads up on code reader, I have had a look around on net but but most only do certain car manufacturers.
Havnt found 1 dedicated to crossfire...

Limp mode and open loop are two totally different things. Open loop is when the engine O2 sensors are not warmed up enough to give the ECM a good reading. The reason for heated sensors is to make the sensors hotter quicker to get you into closed loop faster, which allows your engine to perform to current conditions and demands. Every car I know of starts out in open loop when first started.

A "generic" code reader should do just fine, it doesn't have to be Crossfire or Chrysler specific.

Hi pizzaguy
Thanks For the criticism, just to clarify to couple of things.
I am in the UK the label on the car door says use Ron 95 unleaded
Petrol (gas) which over here is the cheap fuel...@ £1.40 a ltr the super unleaded
Is the more expensive fuel but feel that a performance car should now and then be treated to
A high octane fuel bringing my fuel bill a month to around £500 which is a but of a kick in the nuts just for fuel lol
As far as the other car, the engine warning light came on 3 days before I put it in for mot (early) due to not wanting to drive it
Around with light on due to damaging it further.
I will try and find a code reader as kindly suggested,
But as said in start of thread, basically its more a case of oxidation biulding up on to cat converter sensor
And regularly (4-6 months) needs de oxidising to keep a true reading Of emissions...
Ha lol that's my theory anyway and it worked
Maby the title of thread is miss leading, I was trying to say try the cat cleaner for £15 before spending larger amounts on other
Solutions!
Thanks
Phil

Ah nice one James I shall get a generic code reader then didn't want to end up getting 2 or 3 of them.
Sounds like got lot to learn
cheersy bud
