Default engine oil capacity... one more time? 6.1QT vs. 8.5QT

I read previous topics in the forum concerning the 'update' to the owners manual concerning oil capacity. I just recently took delivery of my Crossfire and did the first oil change. Originally i put in 6QT only to see the low oil level indicator light up. After some research, i found out the manul was wrong and added 2 more QTs of oil. 8 total. supposedly 1/2 a quart still short.

My problem comes in with the oil level indicators. The electronic indicator on the odometer reads "HI" and the dip stick shows the oil level past the full mark. Is there something wrong? Are there some Crossfires (early models, etc.) that should have a 6.1QT motor and others that require 8.5? What was the capacity in the SLK? any change to oil pan design when transplanted to the Chrysler?

And finally, what do i do now? :?

Thanks for all your help.

Drain bit out until the stick and the electronic system are reading "okay" level.

A quick search for SLK320 engine info found:
http://www.slk32.com/pages/engines(usa)/engines2.html
but it doesn't list any capacities.

This page http://www.slk32.com/pages/oilchange/oilchange.html says:
"The 3.2 liter engine uses 8.5 US quarts. It is recommended that only 8 quarts be added initially. Run the engine and check the level. The oil canister/filter can hold about a quart of oil so the level will drop after the oil is circulated for the first time. Add oil as needed."

Had my first oil change. They forgot to reset the computer. No biggie just surprised that they haven't got this down yet. They also put one of the oil reminder stickers in the window. It called for me to return in 3000 miles. This got me to thinking. You don't suppose that they put the wrong stuff in it?

The invoice identifies 8 quarts of "5127394AA OIL 0W40". My oil changes are free so I don't know what the stuff costs or that would clear it up. Can anyone turn this number into something meaningful?

I did my first oil change myself, and I put in about 8 and a third quarts.

The oil to use is Mobil Synthetic 0W40, I believe on the box it says for "European Touring" or something like that. The oil costs me $45 or so, and the filter was $20 from MB.

0W40 is correct..it's called "European Formula" My dealer and the Mercedes dealers in my area get $79 for the oil change. The difference is only $14 from doing it yourself, well worth it since they also check and top off all fluids and my dealer also washes the car after each service. My dealer also put a sticker on the windsheild calling for 3000 miles and when I questioned this, was told the person doing the oil changes does that automatically. You don't need to be a rocket scientist to do an oil change.

That's what the sticker under my hood says. Stuck to the support frame right above the driver's-side headlight assembly.

You can purchase the same filter at your DC dealer for $10 and change.

My dealer performed 'A' service yesterday. $75. On the list of consumed parts was 9 quarts of oil.

Why would the end of the oil dipstick be pinkish...almost the same color as any synthetic oil? It makes it hard to read even with a light.
And why would the stick always shows 'overfilled' when I only put 8 quarts (3.2 l engine) in it?
This is so frustrating.
Any comments would be appreciated

The recommended oil volume is 8 LITERS (it is a M-B engine). Too hard to measure this exactly when we use the English system for measurement in the CONUS . I've tried the 8.5 quarts before & the HI LEVEL warning light came on in my 2007 Coupe. Drained out about 1/2 quart & no issues. (Note: I actually syphoned out about a 1/2 Quart thru the Filter Housing.) Besides, I hate having 1/2 quart of oil sitting around in my garage cabinet.

These oil changes need to be done using the "fleece" filter element instead of the "cellulose "or paper filter element for these engines. I wouldn't trust any service shop performing these oil changes to use the more expensive fleece filter element. The paper filter element tends to collapse over time and you would probably need to come back every 3000 miles. With the fleece filter, you could go 7000 miles, which is the oil change interval the FSS (Flexible Service System) will reset to & M-B recommends this interval when using an approved synthetic oil. I do an oil change on my 2007 Coupe every 2 years but hardly ever drive 7000 miles in that time frame. And yes, I only add 8 quarts of recommended 0w40 synthetic oil (like other Crossfire Owners on this forum; some use 5w40) when I perform the oil change. The dipstick in my car will show FULL doing this.

If the correct oil change fluid capacity is just under 8.5 Quarts (8 Liters), your service tickets will say 9 Quarts. Service Centers don't like having a partial quart around either! They probably empty the half-full quart bottle in the recycle drum & toss the empty bottle in the trash.

I believe the electronic oil level monitoring is somewhat sensitive to the amount of oil poured into the engine during an oil change. If one realizes that when using oil that is packaged in a metric bottle, eight of these bottles are poured into the engine. But none of the bottles are completely drained of all oil that was inside the bottle. That means that there really wasn't exactly 8 liters poured into the engine, but something minutely less than 8 liters. There will always be some residual oil still in the bottles due to surface adhesion between the oil & the bottle.

Now take the same oil change using English measurements.. A quart bottle of oil is just slightly less than a liter bottle of oil. So 8 quarts of oil is only 7.5-7.6 liters of oil. Same facts hold in that not all of the oil in the quart bottles is drained into the engine. So there is something less than the 7.5-7.6 liters of oil in the engine. Now when you add the last 1.2 quart, you come close to pouring in EXACTLY a 1/2 quart due to a partial drain. Oil level switch in the pan may be sensitive enough that this last bit sends it into HI LEVEL warning. Now not all XFire Owners in the CONUS have experienced this issue, but many of us have. So the consensus is pour in 8 quarts, and even if the dipstick on your car reads a little low, it really isn't a big deal.

I've been changing at least once / year......but, in the last 12 months Wilma has been driven less than 1,000 miles......I think I'm gonna let it go another 6 months...even though Mobil says at least once / year.

For the last 2 years I've been taking Wilma to my local Ford dealership.....I bring my own Mobil 0W-40 & my own Mann Fleece filter. It's not driven much, so I'm only getting an oil change once per year. This time as the year approached the Ford dealership sent me a a $10 off coupon usable only on the Crossfire. So last year they charged me about $15. This year (with the coupon)....the charge was only about $5. LOL. My daily driver for the last 4 years is actually a 2017 Focus ST. Wife's is a 2019 Escape Titanium. With all the FordPass points they gave me for buying those 2 Fords new.....I haven't paid real cash for an oil change in a long time! The Kelly Blue Book on the 17 ST with 31,500 miles is actually the same right now as what I actually paid for it brand new....got $4,500 off sticker when I bought it.
