Default radio removal... what to stick in those slots

ive been all over and i cant find a shop that has a removal tool to work on te radio. I did however do a search on here and found out that becker sells the tool.

Regardless of that, whats involved in removing the radio? What does the tool do in that slot... push something up, down, to the left, acts as a hook, etc. It would really help if i knew what i was trying to accomplish before i stick anything else in there and ruin something. in the meantime i wwill call becker and wait for the mail

Why wait for a call back from Becker? Crutchfield sells the tools (www.crutchfield.com). They're the standard tools for European cars.

There are instructions in one of threads on where to find a web page that tells how to build your own tools. Other than that, I don't know what those tools do. I have seen others suggest "just go to any store that installs stereos" and they should have the tools, apparently many Euro cars use the same tools.

Crutchfield lists the tools as "Universal OEM DIN Radio Removal Tools," item #120869001, cost $9.99. The kit includes two tools. While not the cheapest, I've always received excellent service from Crutchfield.

NXMX5,

I had my radio replaced with an Alpine CDA-9820XM and I watched the guy pull the "Infinity" stereo out.

He used two nail clipper files, the little blade that folds out, and pushed in toward the center of the radio. Out the radio came!

Now this guy has installed 1000s of radios in MBs and other European cars, so he may know the secret hand shake on how to pull the Becker radios out of the Crossfire.

I still have the OEM radio at home, but I dont' remember anything near the metal clips. Behind the face plate, the radio is like any other, a metal sleeve that encases the radio.

Good Luck!!!

Chris

Default Radio Slot in Crossfire

The crossfire has the two slots in the radio as most Mercedes Becker radios. The key simply unlocks the two clamps holding the radio in.

If anyone goes to an audio shop that has no clue.....Run to a different audio shop, no rocket science there.

As for the post above EXCELLENT radio choice in the CDA-9820XM.
Matches the dash and provides am/fm/cd/& xm radio built in. THe X Micro antenna is sold seperatly but that unit is a great bang for the buck.

Regards,

Just be careful if you are going to use something other than the appropriate tool to remove the radio. The clips inside those slots are weak and can break easily. My dealer said their own XFire tech had broken some himself. I trued initially by cutting an old credit card up to the size of the slots, it didn't work.

DID IT. what i did was break a pair of tweezers in half. then stick the tweezer into the slot, hugging the 'outisde' wall of the radio. once the tweezer stops, you have to push it horizontally towards the door. you might hear a metallic clicnk. thats the clip. its a pain in the @$$ to hold the clip and pull the unit out, so i had a friend help. one worked the tweezer while the other pulled out the unit. yes i could have ordered crutchfield part number 120869001, but im just not that patient i really wanted this radio in this weekend.

thanks for all the help --

Dealer also has the tool. I had my dealer pop mine out without any hassles.

Hey Chris...
Man, wish I could have got a better look at that Alpine unit last weekend. The feature set looks just like what I'm seeking. Several reviews have complained about the dim display, how's it seem to you? If only this unit did MP3...

I'm heading out of town (Groton, CT) for about 10 days, are you busy the weekend of the 18th? I could meet you somewhere for lunch or something (not Burger King )and get a closer look? I'll buy!
