Cat removal
Has anyone removed the cats?
I'm thinking about it, but I first would like to know if it's been tried.
Does that trigger a CEL, I'm not sure if there's a downpath o2 sensor.
Any input would be appreciated.

i haven't, but i gurantee a hundred people are going to say "why would you ever want to do that, and ruin the nice quiet cabin of the xfire"
then youll say, "for performance"
then they'll say, buy another car

Lord Nikon was considering changing the system to reduce the cat cells by half to improve performance and to stay legal.
I expect he will be able to comment once he sees the topic.
I think it would have cost about ’500, but he is off with his AMG engine at the moment.

It looks like the car has a total of four catalytic converters. You've got two pre-cats - one hanging off each manifold. These pre-cats each have an upstream and downstream oxygen sensor.
The upstream sensor helps to monitor the air/fuel ratio by sampling raw exhaust gas as it comes out of the engine.
The downstream sensor is there just to make sure you've got the pre-cat in place. The ECU is looking for a voltage difference between the up and downstream sensors as the result of the pre-cats being in place. If the voltage difference between those two sensors is out of spec., you'll throw a code.
Further down the exhaust system you've got two, main cataylitic converters. These don't appear to have any sensors near them. These two can be removed without throwing any codes.

i did this on a corvette i owned (white of course) and it permanently stained the rear bumper yellow around the exhaust pipes...i'll never do that again. the gains to be seen 1 or 2 tenths in the 1/4 mile.
