After bit of advice please. Changed the Fuel Filter over yesterday on my 2004 Crossfire (not genuine OEM part) but was assured it was the correct one for the car. Easy to change, no problem at all apart from after about 5 mins of driving the car, a whining noise developed from that area & really noisy inside the car itself & I assumed it was the Fuel Pump? I filled it up with petrol & took it for a drive down the dual carriageway to see if it would clear but it didn't. Seems to get louder when I go around roundabouts & almost disappears when I turn left. I can't work out why it's doing it & the car itself seems to be driving perfectly, infact I would say it seems alot more responsive.

 

I'm not really sure how it might relate to your "noisy" issue but I know that the OEM fuel filter has a built in fuel pressure regulator. The replacement filter you bought might not have that feature . . .

 

Thanks for the reply. Apparently we are pretty certain that the replacement one does have this built it. Am I likely to be doing more harm than good whilst it's making this noise?

 

Sorry but without knowing what the noise actually is and what's making it, I can't come up with any answer that question . . .

 

Typically.. when you change something then have any issues.. you go back to what you did. No way I would run anything short of "forum recommended" (needswings) filter and/regulator. We had a girl a while back traveling and had changed with a parts store brand.. car started having issues starting up on her trip and that was the cause.

 

The fuel filter has no moving parts, so forget about that causing your problem. The only thing back there to make that kind of racket is the fuel pump, and if that goes out you won't be moving very far. I would suggest having a look under the car to make sure nothing is dangling and have someone start the car while you're back there and try to pinpoint where the noise is emanating from.

 

Oh yeah that's right.. never mind there is a regulator in there..


And we all know when you change something and have an issue.. it's just not your lucky day.


Might I suggest if you still have the old one (that still worked) put it back in to eliminate the possibility at no additional cost.

 

You got that wrong, there are no moving parts in there, except the parts that move.

This is what I would think happened, wrong connections and having pump cavitation somehow. Also, there was a post or two that indicated hose crimping, again system/pump cavitation. Check and recheck, when these are eliminated suspect a defective pump/filter out of the box.

 

Thanks for all the replies guys.. Just a quick update - it now onlymakes a noise on ignition & once started it seems fine. Took it out this morning for a few miles without any noise at all. Obviously this doesn't mean it won't come back & it's being checked over during the week to make sure it was fitted correctly etc.

3 years ago I replaced my fuel pump; if memory serves me correctly. it simply died.
Now, like the poster, three years later, I have a noisy fuel pump. It comes on like it should to pressurize the fuel line, then gets loader based on fuel demand. It never stops running.
I believe these pump have a built in Pressure Regulator. If so, I need a new pump.
