I've seen a few other posts around here about Bosch alternators and modifications needed to get them to work. The Bosch alternator to get is AL0787X. Exact fit without modification and despite it being a bit larger in size it went right in without hesitation. Ironically it even had the Mercedes star etched into it though advertised a just a Bosch alternator on Amazon.

Great learning thread; Thanks to all!!!
Anyone care to hazard a guess on approximate lifetime expectancies of alternator and water pump? We are at 86.5K.

My 08 was born in Sept of 2007, and currently under 26K. It was doused in Mobil-1 oil when the funnel kinked sideways and a large amount of oil spilled into the alternator (a few years ago). After a few days waiting for Mobil to answer an email, a flush of water with dish soap (and a copious rinse), it 'smelled' a little but still produced optimally. So, although young (in revolutions/years) but was well doused in synthetic oil and cleaned with inexpensive dish detergent/water, with a total rinse of water, and it hasn't given me any problem at all. Hope this helps.
