Default Engine or transmission trouble?

I just bought an SRT6 with 65K miles on it. It drives and runs well, but after it warms up it refuses to accelerate normally when I floor it, but very slowly gains speed. I have noted that it also is slow to shift out of 4th and into 5th, OR the torque converter is slow to disengage in 5th gear, one or the other.

Anyone have any thoughts? Needs a transmission filter and fluid change? (I have the right stuff on order.) OR could this be a fuel pump failure or other engine-related problem?

EDIT: One other factor; mechanic believes intercooler pump is failing. i plan to install a Johnson pump.

Two thoughts:

1) Don't waste your time troubleshooting an SRT with a suspected-bad pump. CHANGE THE DAMN PUMP then deal with any issues once the most common failure item is behind you.

2) I've never owned an automatic transmission that I did not have the fluid and filter changed every 50-60 thousand miles. (And to hell with what the manual says.)

Pizzaguy, replacement of the pump is already planned for Eurocharge, Houston. Thanks for your reply. I'm changing the trans filter when the fluids arrive (already ordered).

Your problem is the IC pump, the current thinking is to use the Bosch pump and not the Johnson as they seem to fail to quickly.
The new Bosch pump ends with the numbers 010, do not replace with a Bosch pump with the same number as is in the car now, they fail too soon.
Click for part and supplier, you can also go to NeedsWings for the same part.

Great news, onehundred80, which is the direction I thought I was heading in the opposite lane. Thank you at least $100, which is how much less the Bosch unit is than the Johnson unit, plus is more durable. I do appreciate the great replies from you guys who know these cars better than I.
