Troubleshooting & Technical Questions & ModificationsHave technical or modification questions about the Crossfire?
Find out the answer, or give advice in here!
These next pictures are not what you have but it will give you an idea of what your dealing with. I havent taken the one on my crossfire apart but it sure looks like the same principle. You can see how the fuses are replaced.
fuse block with fuses installed. fuse block with everything removed.
Thanks so much for the help friend. This is a great forum, tons of info and great folks. I really need to park it, finish these bikes and deliever them to Fla next month. Taking my 50th birthday on the road, I will go down to O Reiley's and order a few. I had never looked in that box. I have the jumper off and battery unhooked. I did Run a jumper wire from the battery term at the far right of the box over to the alternator term on the far left and the system is working well. I will check into replacing the 125v fuse. This happens when people jump start these cars incorrectly. I remember the Guy had a BIG upper box and told me he had jumped started the car. Everyone might want to remember this just in case some clown blows the fuse. I carry blade fuses and will have my jumper in the tool Kit. Glad it had not been wrecked and I remember the bill was just 500 bucks, most likely a bumper spray.
Car is charging so that is resolved for the time being but sadly I am still getting NO communication with any modules on my Launch CRP123 & Autel310, both are good scanners that should clear my generic 7015 Turbine Speed Trans code, its most likely going to the Indie ...
Damit MAN I cant believe I cant get it out of Limp MODE, I am ordering another conductor plate and trying again but my new plug is snug and dry . I did go with a halfprice conductor plate, might get a deluxe this time, I will buy the 80.00 plate. Chow GG in Tn 30 Days stuck in LIMP MODE. R170 SLK230Kompressor M45 Supercharger,

From what my stuff shows you need a higher end scan tool to work with that year of r170.
Early R170 had a 38 pin diagnostic socket under the hood which was required for anything beyond basic reading codes but sometimes that doesnt mean you cant do it anyways with higher end scanners.
Up to 2000 used both connectors. 2001 and later worked with most of the cheaper scanners.
On my older bmw's for instance that have a similar underhood connector setup you have to short two wires together to get it to send the signal thru the obd connector under the dash allowing regular scanners to work with it.
Even if you have fixed the original cause your going to need to clear the code to get it out of limp mode. The 13 pin connector is more common of an issue than the valvebody in the transmission so that may be a problem too.
When you get back I can try to help you find a scan tool that will work with it if you want.
Good luck on the trip.
YES MY 1999 has the 16 pin under the dash, not sure if it has the 38 pin under the hood. When I had the crossfires I used the launch123 , great tool. I picked up the autel310 because youtuber said it worked in the XF. It gets me to the 5 modules, (drive, abs, AC, etc) but when I go into each it pops up cant communicate , with any. When I go back and do auto scan then the only code that shows up is generic 7015 (turbine speed sensor A) which I thought meant the conductor plate. I also replaced the trans plug and have rechecked it to make sure it was staying dry. Pulled up the floor cover and checked to see if I saw any trans fluld but may take tcm out and check the plugs for oil from wicking. I
I keep reading that on sometimes the wheel speed sensor (right rear) can cause issues but I would think the code would say wheel sensor. I just dont know at this point and I have a hard time giving in and taking it to the shop
The only cheap scanner I know that does most of the stuff is the foxwell 510. I have one of those and have cleared codes on r170's before but I dont remember the year now. The nice part about the foxwell is you can take it with you unlike the laptop setup ones. Its slow but it works. There is an addon for it that hooks to the underhood plug on the older cars too if needed. Also you can buy software from them for other brands of cars later if need be. I have bmw, chrysler and mercedes in mine.
If its just the code being in there from previous problems you have fixed then going to a local garage and asking them to clear the codes and seeing if they come back is an option. Personally I like having a way to clear them myself so the foxwell might be something to consider. Make sure its the 510. Mines a 510 elite.
The Autel Diaglink OBD2 Scanner MD802 AND my Launch123 Both did not communicate with any Modules. This is ODD. Makes me think that its something other than the conductor plate & plug that is the issue. I have use the LaunchCRP123 on these cars for a few years with great success in the past. I was able to get a 3 pack of 125 fuses for 8 bucks, be here in the morning but there has to be a reason that I am missing.

MB guys are telling me the 1999 SLK230k (16 pin under dash) that none of the modules, Trans, etc are OBD accessible and the only way to reset the Trans is with the MB Star. Suggested I buy AM79C874VI Chip MB STAR C4 MB SD Connect Compact 4 Diagnostic Tool with WIFI Function (Without HDD) for around 425 and then have a member load the software for another 150. It will take a month to get here from China land. I have read so much stuff that is not true just on this car its crazy. I have one Indie shop a good ways away that I might try but the car is stuck in 2nd so I cant get on the highway. I just ordered the Foxwell510 Elite , hopefully it will reach the trans and I can drive the car. Hard for me to buy a 600 scanner when I paid about the same for the car. I am frustrated.

My Foxwell will be here Monday and I have a Launch431Pro that will be here Sunday. I dropped well over a Grand in scan tools alone. Thank God Amazon has free returns! I am tired of messing around. the Indie shop is out of business so its on me to clear the code. What do you think about the one the MB forum is telling me to buy? Its a bit extreme, I may have to sell the car, this is crazy.

The mb forum people that are pushing that higher end tool are... how to put this.. of the my way or nothing sort.
The foxwell should do what you want. It cant do everything that other tool can but for most people they never need the other features.
Take the bmw stuff I do (I have to use it as example since its kind of my specialty ) the foxwell will do just about everything I need code clearing wise and code reading wise. Also I can see data from the different computers in the vehicle.
On the other hand the foxwell can code a new module to the cars and can register a new battery but its cant set options coding wise. I cant use the foxwell to code how the doors unlock such as having it just unlock the drivers door and not all the doors on the first press of the remote.
I cant program the doors to autolock at 35 mph, etc. So the fancy stuff I have is better when you take that into account. But the fancy stuff cost more and isnt needed for code reading or clearing. Also the fancy stuff cost to much to keep in the car even if it would fit in the car to carry around.
The foxwell is tiny and I can keep it in the vehicle at all times without it getting in the way and does what I would need a tool like that for when Im not home.
Thanks so much for the help, like I was telling them on the MB forum, if I decide to keep the car I will consider the setup they suggest but I simply want to clear the code out of the TCM so I can move forward. I dont want to see 100 modules at this time. By Monday hopefully I will know whats up with the car. The Launch431pro is Bi Directional whatever than means but they swear it will do the same as the Star from MB. Hell, I dont even know if the Top works yet! I like to keep a Scan Tool in the car myself, I plan on doing some Autocross and we have an 1/8th mile Drag Strip that I enjoy on Friday eves. I was able to get LSD for the car for less than 200 and with all the pullies, injectors, slicks (Thanks Grip Grip) I am going to beat this car till it blows or Goes. I am going to look at a E500 that I might throw in the barn for a Transplant later. I can get it for cheap and it has nice rims on it. I will let you know how it goes.
I bought one of the launch 431 pro's just now off amazon too. I liked the specs and since its an android tablet too I can run my other software on it so I figure its worth adding to my stuff.
Its bad ***, I ended up with it to the door for 825.00, some Lighting sale Sat eve. Mine is the Pro V4, I believe they offer a Pro + also. When it arrive it had to be updated so plan on all day for that. Still can only access the modules via the 38 pin since in my 99 slk230k they are not OBDII linked. The kit includes many adaptors and I have mine hooked up to the 38 pin and power will come from the battery via clamp terminals. Having never pulled codes via the Big pin I am going slow and waiting for it warm up. My 38 pin is under the cover in the box with the ECM. I understand that even if you have the adaptor with the foxwell510 it will not talk with the modules. Glad I know someone that has one , I can only assume the modules are called the same regardless and it shows it work on the R170 . We shall see.
The 38 pin jumper is also self powered on my car. I kept a same charger on the battery while getting into the modules, all had some sort of codes that I cleared, now I will see what comes back on restart. Amazing tool that will be hard to give back. I saw a few selling for 1199.00,
. I have yet to check to see if the roof works, I would love to turn off the back O2 sensors, just after the cats. May I ask, are you a mechanic or hobbyist?

I was a mechanic back in the 80's. Back then a carrier in the computer field didn't pay much and I enjoyed it
I host websites now for large forum sites like this one and store sites for businesses. I wrote a webserver back in the day that allows me to host sites at a lower cost than others since it takes less resources than normal.
I doubt it will allow you to turn off the rear o2 sensors since thats more of a custom coding thing than what the tool is designed for.
I figured about the rear cats, I might try defoulers because I was going to gut them. As far as the car its great. I wanted to thank everyone for the help. Ala, my Foxwell510 came today, you had mentioned you use it on your cars so I may check it out. I always have cars to mess with and it seems my Launch CRP123 is not so good on the older stuff. It was great on the XF, maybe I will sell em all and keep the PRO because you feel like a PRO with it!
I put defoulers on my f150 and it stopped it from setting cat codes 99% of the time. Every few months under the right conditions it will still set the code. The reason mine is doing it is the previous owner dropped a 5.4 in it when it came with a 4.6. He didnt change anything else just the engine. Its not very happy about it. I dont drive the truck that much so I put up with it
Moving the o2 sensors out of the stream with the defoulers really helped.
its odd to me that the SLK only has the 2 midway, my XF had 2 up front and 2 in the rear. If the defoulers will work then I will gut them and move on. I am so happy with the car. Shifts great, only light is BAS for some reason but that is no big deal. I cant believe I have wasted a month trying to clear this code but it is behind me now, in the morning I address the top. I have yet to try it. I am going to put some miles on it and drain the trans/convertor again. LSD diff is my next project. I will touch base about the website, thanks
