Default Starting and Water Ingress Issue

Hi from the Uk

My wife owns a 2006 Roadster automatic and has been having starting problems. When she turns on ignition no clicking or turning over of starter motor but the fan comes on. We fitted a new heavy duty battery. Also near the battery the area is getting soaking wet after rain

Any advice will be very much appreciated

Seach the RCM (relay control module). Common issue easy fix for around $150.

Probably the most common issue with our cars.

If you prefer to buy a new RCM, use an online search (Google, etc.) and shop for "2003 Mercedes SLK320 Relay Control Module". Some sites call the ECU an RCM, just look at the photo of the item, if it looks the same as the photos of the RCM in the thread above, it's the right part. DO NOT Search for "Chrysler Crossfire Relay Control Module" and buy only new modules.

I would suspect your water issue is caused by clogged drains in the channel below the windscreen.

Do this:
Remove wiper arms.
Remove the torx screws holding the cover down under the wipers.
Lift over off (it goes from one side of car to the other, you must remove the wipers first.)
Vacuum out the drains under there.
Stop parking the car where leaves and debris can fall on it.

Hi

Thank you so much for the replies, I will look into it right away, my only other concern is the water getting under the bonnet, the battery and RCM area were very wet after some prolonged rain over here

Hi

Sorry I've just read in a post on here but can't find it again someone mentioned about the speed of the fan when the ignition is switched on. Its either if it increases in speed it is the RCM or if not its the battery connections or vice versa

THis is how it works:

YOu get in the car, turn the key, the instrument panel warning lights come on, you turn key to "START" but the starter does not engage.
You relax the key, let it go back to "ON".
You wait 30 seconds.
If the engine cooling fan speeds up to very high, noisy speed - this tells us that the Fan module is powered up but the ECU is not powered due to a bad RCM.
If the fan does not speed up, we would look at other items like starter interlock, pulse module, weak battery, etc.

The reason we are quick to blame the RCM is because the speeding up of the fan is due to the "engine control relay" output from the RCM not powering up, so the ECU is not powered up, but the Fan Module IS powered up. Anytime the Fan Module is powered up, it expects to see "tickle pulses" from the ECU. If the ECU is not powered up, there will be no 'tickle pulses' and the Fan Module assumes its lost contact with the ECU and runs the fan in emergency mode to keep the car from overheating - because the ECU is not there to tell the Fan module how fast to spin the fan.

This is always a bad RCM, either the solder junctions at the connector pins fractured, or the engine control relay is bad. This happens very often to our RCMs and to the RCMs in the SLK320 and SLK230, as the RCM is the same for all three cars.

Hi

Many thanks for your help, yes drains were blocked and the RCM is faulty.

Superb forum, looking forward to hopefully contributing in the future
