I don't know about automatics, I have a manual, but I found this thread and a lot more with a quick search.
I hope this helps.

Car still hesitated and ruff idle. Last resort i removed the cats. Been driving around a few weeks stopped all my problems. Now Im taking it to a shop and putting cats back on. Hate the sound and the smell of the exhaust.

I have driven no less than five vehicles past 200,000 miles and never replaced a cat. My 1994 GMC had 408,000 when it was junked, never had a cat replaced.

I really wonder what clogs them, cause they DO get clogged.

When i bought the car i fought running rich and lean for about a year. I dont know how long before i bought it. No clue how long the last owner ran that way. Or if they used premium fuel.
