I have a 2005 Crossfire that was running great. Went to start it and the BAS/ESP light came on along with the ABS and check engine light and the spoiler raised up (all at the same time). I replaced the battery and did the turning of the steering wheel with no luck. It's also in "limp mode". With a cheap scanner I got codes P0500 (Vehicle speed sensor A) & P0720 (Output Speed Sensor Circuit). Had it towed to a local shop and they said they can't read it, that I need to take it to a dealer. The problem is, where I live (south central Florida) none of the dealerships have the RGB III scanner for crossfire anymore. Any suggestions on how to get this car running again?

 

The speed sensor is located in the conductor plate. When the tcm experiences erratic or no signals from the speed sensor this can cause limp mode. I would assume the mechanic checked the external wiring to the tcm. And checked the tcm location for water. If there is no water in the floorboard and the wires are solid then it might be a faulty tcm. However on the 722.6 it is most likely that the conductor plate needs to be replaced. Along with the plastic piece the seals the wiring going into the trans. I had that exact same thing happen on my 04 at 158,000 miles. Any modern scanner can find codes in the tcm, ecu and other modules on the crossfire.

Yes modern scanners will work. However, they need to be setup correctly. The local shop should have been able to read the codes in the various modules. The scanner needs to be setup for a Mercedes.


My own scanner setup

 

I use a Snap On Solus. It identifies a Chrysler Crossfire as a Chrysler Crossfire. Just a difference in the scanners I guess. It should read it as Chrysler. The electronics are programmed to come up under that. Weird to me that yours would have to be MB. But as long as it scans it at least you get the codes. Did you use the vin in the programming?

 

The problem with the Benz/Chrysler bastard child called the Crossfire (IMHO) is some of the modules are MB excess off the shelf ones put into the crossfire (ie mine is a 2008). The 'divorce' between Chrysler and Benz, and their really bad contracted electronics systems, each danced around their own software and I suspect, patents. Neither want to own the car, and Benz dealership service departments will not service them. Way too many owners are caught in between as evidenced by the fact to get some parts we must ask for MB SLK-320 or AMG-32 specific parts so as to not pay Chrysler an arm and a foot to 'self-help' with servicing our cars. IMHO Chrysler dumping the service tools (and electronic diagnostics tools), and training, in their dealership service departments should be marginally criminal. I have purchased TWO different CRP-123 (1 new and 1 used) and neither read the crossfire (Chrysler) correctly, and only partially as a MB SLK-320.

I will not purchase another 'OBDII scanner' for this car, ever. It should not be this hard to diagnose it's systems within, period.

I must say that as an option, the micropod II DRB III emulator works well for reading all of the module codes, resetting some of the hard ones like the airbag dtc, and getting the car to relearn the TPM sensors, at a fraction of the cost (~$140.). The hardest part is fixing the grounding issue of the micropod II. One of the members of this forum even posted a virtual machine such that you can use modern laptops running windows 11 to drive the micropod - software already installed in the virtual machine.

I understand the reluctance to put a location in your personal information. However without at least a general location; S. Cal, Eastern KY, etc you may be missing out on getting help. No point in reaching out to someone on the other side of the country, but should you be near by, there are members who are willing to lend a hand and some even have the DRB III scan tool or an emulator. Just saying.

 

I agree, too many are now reluctant to even identify their state. It does make a difference.

I was threatened to be shot in one thread years ago, the mods let that slip by even if it was illegal to threaten someone.
I do not bother to answer many query's these days, especially dumb ones or ones that a simple search would answer.
These days we have too many clapped out cars with problems, I do not answer posts about them either.

 

Congratulations on finding and fixing your problem. And thanks for reporting back. I had rabbits chew up my headlight and outdoor temperature sensor wires.
