Default Codes P0638 & P0123

Hi All,

Am looking for some assistance - to see if anyone else has experience of same. I’m not just “asking blindly”, I have researched various forums/chats and tried to narrow down.

I’m fortunate to own an SRT6 - c.50k miles and I love it. I’m fortunate that the cars previous custodians have looked after the car well and have gone above and beyond in this regard. The cars is purposely as close to stock/oem and hasn’t been fettled with/pimped up.

The car has been great since I’ve had it. Gradually I started to notice a slight hesitation on accelerating, which was intermittent/random and would ultimately resolve and not affect any longer drives. Gradually got ever so slightly worse. Started getting odd codes P0638 and P0226. Could reset codes with basic obd2 reader and checking on various Chrysler Crossfire and Mercedes forums, eventually replaced Accelerator pedal (oem direct from Mercedes). Throttle reset and all good.

Car recently in for MOT/service. Full oil change, four new Michelin pilot sport 5s and thought I’d take out for nice drive. Drive was great! First long drive I’ve had since new pedal and was smooth and instant throughout. Back home smiling like a Cheshire Cat and thought I’d check new bulbs. Whilst doing so, car started having a surging idle whilst in park/handbrake on. Plugged in obd reader and codes P0638 and P0123 coming up. I can clear but were coming back. Sometimes BAS/ESP light and cel would come on too.

Having checked what I have to date, here’s where my latest thoughts are.

The latest two codes are unlikely to be accelerator pedal - just changed with oem/new Merc stock (and is right pedal/code!). Therefore is throttle body, or pcm/ecm. From what I’ve read is unlikely to be the latter as apparently seldom go wrong (?). I did read that many matters attributed to pcm/ecm are often sorted by a new rcm/ fix from DJ Tighe. The other is that it is the throttle body.

I suspect I’ll look to sort/replace the throttle body. Does anyone have experience of how doable this is on srt6. I’m certainly not a mechanic but have changed the accelerator pedal, blower motor resistor and others myself (or is it defo a mechanic job?). I’ve seen some references that is easier on SRT6 than on n/a. If that fails, I’ll move on next to pcm/ecm, indeed rcm. (Anyone who could share the correct part number for srt6 throttle body would get brownie points).

Excuse the long background but hopefully helpful. I’m hoping that the broader community can share any of their own experiences or thoughts by way of assistance.

Before you replace anything try cleaning the MAF sensor and the throttle body.
Use caution when removing the MAF housing locking ring. The plastic is brittle, but the part is still available if it breaks.

Hi,
I'm sorry, I didn't notice that it was an SRT. I see, so your car would have a MAP sensor.
I don't know if you've replaced one or not. Just in case here's a link to a post about it. LINK to MAP sensor replacement
Good luck,
John
