Starter Not Engaging On 1st Key Turn But Still Starts
Hi All,
Hopeing someone has experienced this issue and knows how to fix it.
Ive got an small intermittant issue with starting my 03 auto coupe that i cannot work out why its doing it.
Every now and then (usually at least once a week) i come to start the car and the starter doesnt engage straight away on the key turn. I turn the key and get a 'clicking' sound (usually between 2 and 6 clicks) and then the starter engages and the car fires up as usual. Runs fine until i shut it off and then i have the same problem starting it again.
The unusual part is that when i disconnect the battery, leave it a min and then re-connect the battery. The issue seems to resolve itself and the car then starts up fine on the 1st turn of the key. The problem seems to always return though and its at random time intervals between the disconnecting the battery and the problem returning.
Car does have a small battery drain but ive just replaced the battery recently and its currently holding a full charge.
Anyone come accross this issue or know what might be causing the problem?
Many thanks
Ash

Check all the connections AND the cables themselves in the starting circuit for corrosion damage: Negative battery cable to the fender, positive connection at the battery. cables to and from the alternator, check the ground strap below the engine from the frame to the engine. The battery itself could be problem, even when new some will have bad cells; get at the minimum a load test completed on the battery at an auto parts store. It rains a lot in England. I suspect corrosion/rust somewhere is causing your problem.
When all that is completed we can get into pulse module, RCM and starter.

Here is one on the starter: Is my battery bad?

the fastest way to double check the battery is to turn on your headlights,,,wait 30 to 45 seconds ,,start the car if it is the batt. all u will get is clicking,, and the car will not start.
Hi Both,
Thanks for coming back to me, ive tested the battery and that seems to be fine.
Ill move onto checking all the cables as you advised Zip thank you for your advice
Many thanks

I would almost 100% guarantee it's the battery cables. I'd replace both positive and negative cable assemblies and also do James' mod at the same time:
