Hello, I purchased my 2006 Chrysler Crossfire Limited Coupe back in November and it’s been a lot. But the issue i’m having and needing assistance with is after a large rainstorm. My vehicle will turn perfectly fine, nothing out of the normal. But when i start driving and getting to 40mph, I feel that my car isn’t shifting gears automatically. The engine revs louder than normal and the RPM will continue to rise without the gear shift. It is an automatic. I’ve looked to troubleshoot the car and used an OBD2 Scanner and got 3 codes. P0301(Cylinder 1 Misfire) P0600 (Serial Communication Link) and P0128(Coolant Thermostat below regulating temp). While driving for no more than 10 minutes, a clear smoke started coming out of the hood of the car. I couldn’t determine the smell but it looked like steam. I opened the hood and also couldn’t tell where it was coming from. I let the car sit for a few days before checking again thinking it was possibly water. But i had the same issue with the smoke coming from the engine bay and will not go over 40 without that high RPM issue. Ive been looking all over the place, and I am hoping that I can get guidance as to where to start looking to resolve the problem, and/or maybe find someone in the SATX area that works with these vehicles. Any and all information is extremely useful.

 

You have two different problems

If it's smoke you should be able to smell it.

Check the coolant level in the reservoir tank. There is a white plastic fin attached to the rear of the reservoir tank and the coolant should be right at the top of that fin. You want to have 50% of Zerex GO5 anti freeze and distilled water in the cooling system. Finding the leak shouldn't be that hard. Installing a new thermostat isn't difficult. Not being able to look at your car it is hard to tell if a bad thermostat is causing the problem or a split hose is causing the DTC code P0128 to set indicating a problem with the thermostat. Be sure you have a good oring on the cap of the reservoir tank.

You mentioned a hard rain. Water can leak into your car and get into the passenger foot area, where under the carpet is the TCU Transmission Control Module. Pull the carpet back remove the white styrofoam and the steel plate by loosen three black plastic nuts. When that steel plate is removed you can easily see the TCU and other modules. Inspect the area for water intrusion. Under the black plastic at the base of the windshield there are four drain holes that if the car is left outside eventually get plugged with leaves and dirt. Remove the windshield wipers, pull the black plastic up ( there are a number of screws you need to remove from the plastic cowl at the firewall in the engine bay) and blow compressed air down those drains to clear them. If they are plugged water gets into the car and will ruin the TCU etc.

Clovis, if the prior help has not born fruit, check under the oil cap and see if there is anything wrong there (I am hoping you checked the condition of the oil off the dipstick?). Good luck!

You could borrow a Radiator Pressure Tester Kit from an auto store. That's what I used to find the leak on my Audi S4. I did not even need dye as you can hear and see where the leak is,
