Funny noise from dash area
Hi,
Occasionally my Crossfire produces a funny noise from the dash area. Hard to tell exactly where, but it seems to be the area of the passenger glove compartment or the place where the radio and the a/c controls are located.
It sounds like a loud computer hard drive, but like 10 times louder, quite annoying. It can be heard with engine off or on, as long as the ignition is on. It also can be heard with radio on or off, regardless whether there is a CD in it or not or whether the CD is actually playing or not.
Does anybody have an idea what this could be?
The warranty is running out at the end of the month and I have a hard time reproducing the sound at the dealership.
Thanks.

Just out of curiosity, what model crossfire is this? Base, Limited, or SRT? What model year?
You could try removing the in cabin air filtration cover and filters, stick your head up in there and see what you can find.

I had same problem. There are threads in this forum that talks about the same problem with no solution. I have not heard the noise for at least 7 months. Hope it stays that way.

I have the same noise, its irregular and doesn't happen all the time. Mines an '05 LTD coupe. Noise is on the passenger side, sounds like behind the glove box. When you start the car its sounds like a circuit tripping for about 20-30 seconds then it stops. I'm reluctant to take it in for fear they'll tear the dash out and the way they treat our cars, you get the picture. I believe this also happened to Firebase D who posts here, his dealer did nothing, he thinks its a short that can at some point cause a fire? I posted him in the main section, his e-mail and instant message are turned off. I have not heard back from him.
I did mess (clean) the cabin air filter and as I recall there nothing else you can see. I think in an earlier post someone suggested this might be from a blower fan relay that is in that area. Other have suggested leaves in the blower. I could not find any leaves. Sorry I can't be of more help.

I have had the same problem, sounds like a mouse is running around in my glove box. It doesn't always happen, I'm also afraid to take it to the dealer, they might just take the whole dash apart and still have the same problem but now the dash will rattle too...

Do the noises change when you rotate the vent directional dial, I'm thinking it might be a flapper valve.

It may well have something to do with the A/C controls: I observed that under normal circumstances the red light that indicates that the A/C is working does not come on when the fan is completely shut down, it only comes on when the fan speed is set to at least "1". Same goes for the light that indicates that no air from the outside is used.
Recently though I found the lights flickering when the fan speed was set to "1/2", the first setting above zero. And with the noise the other day the light for the A/C even came on when the fan was shut down completely.
I will observe this further.
NOTE... this sound is most likely NOT coming from your heater box or glove compartment.
Listen closely and make sure it's NOT your stereo head unit. Mine does this from time to time as it tries to read the disc in the unit. I have the head unit with NAV.
It sounds like a "TAK-TAK-TAK-TAK-TAK-TAK-TAK" sound (if that describes it good enough).
Sometimes long... sometimes for only a half second or so.
I just let my system ride through it. Only once have I gotten a "Disc cannot be read" error on the head unit. I simply ejected the disc, removed it and then re-inserted it and let the unit take it. Seated and spun up right away.
Hope that helps.

Try to notice if the noise happens only when it's very cold outside. This has been the case for me. It does seem to come from the dash behind the glove compartment. It seems that something runs for a while until things warm up.
