Default Can you re-program and re-key an existing unit

Can you re-program and re-key an existing unit.
There a couple of these on eBay.
One is a brand new unit with a blank key and another unit is a used one needing to be re-keyed and would have to have the chip re-programmed.
Can this be done or not?

Thank you in advance for any input.

No, you can not reprogram the key or have a key cut from what I have found out. The dealer has to submit your VIN to a company who creates the key and send it to the dealer. The dealer may need to program the key to the car. The Dealer was very secretive about how they did this, but the service manual has a procedure to reprogram your key.

I’ve seen quite a few used ones selling on eBay and thought that the folks buying them must know something about how to re-key and reprogram them or they wouldn’t buy them if they could not be reworked.

I purchased a new uncut key from E-bay. Have not attempted to program it yet, I just assumed I could take it to the dealer to have it cut for my car. I just bought it to have as a spare incase one gets lost or broken. I'll have to check with the dealer about having it cut.

I doubt that you can program a key that will start your Crossfire. The key fob may be programmed to unlock the doors, but I believe the key has an RFID which cannot be reprogrammed. As you know the SLK is similar to the Crossfire. There is a very nice discussion about this at the following link.

Yes, there's a way to make the car learn about a new key. Give me a few minutes and I will look it up. Not sure about getting a new one cut, but a good locksmith should be able to do it for you...

Edit: Here you go:

From the service manual page 8N-37:

STANDARD PROCEDURE - TRANSMITTER PROGRAMMING

The Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) Transmitter(s) can be programmed by the customer without special tools.

PROGRAMMING PROCEDURE

Transmitter programming by the customer is done by performing the following steps:

1. Press either the lock or unlock button momentarily twice.
2. Turn the key in the ignition switch to the ON/RUN position within 30 seconds.
