Anyone know if 1/2 a quart of that other ATF will do any harm? Should I drain and refill with correct fluid.
I don't think a 1/2 a quart will do any harm. I was using Valvoline Max Life in mine till I got the connector plug fixed and it didn't do any damage.

The '04 shop manual shows a drain plug and mentions it. It is the same in the '05 manual
The manual also confuses by saying remove two plugs, but they are not plugs. They are for holding a sensor harness against the heat shield.
They only have one plug not two. Punching holes is not needed or desirable. How do you punch a hole in sheet metal and not dent it? Try it on a beer can.
The question I believe was draining the torque converter not the pan.
PS
I was confused both questions were raised but the TC question was the hardest to get an answer for. I say the manual does not mention one but others swear it does and the answer is coming .....we hope.

I think its in the service manual but from memory, you drive it to reach temp, then park. Apply parking brakes, shift from park, to reverse, to drive and back a few times. Then leave in drive to check the level.

Oh u need some kind of dip stick too. It doesnt come with one. So u need to buy one or make one or borrow one.

Going to have a local shop change the fluid and filter out. Any suggestions on where to get recomended trans fluids that are on the approved list at local auto parts houses? Auto zone and napa didn't have anything on the list. I would prefer to not use the valvoline max life.

Thanks!

I should do it and then post a "How to"!

Then people could READ it and do it themselves.
If they had anymore questions then they could not post in multiple postings asking the same questions and/or SEARCH for more info already located on the forum!

so if I was changing my tranny conductor plate (fault code P0715) would I nee to put 4 quarts of ATF back in?

The tranny is not a place to cut corners. Just go to the Merc dealership and ask for their latest. It wasn't $20/qrt the last time I changed but maybe costs have gone up considerably.

wrong one. Its number 5127382AB. It will also say "Crossfire/Sprinter" on the front of the bottle.

After reading thru this thread I was looking for the best price on the correct fluid and came across this:

idparts.com

It appears the Shell ATF134 will work at a cost of $7.99/Qt.

Can you just leave the dipstick in instead of putting the sealed cap back on?

No, the dipstick is for several models with different distances to the pan. Therefore what they sell is WAY long and will be sticking out about a foot. Once you know the marks on the end of the stick you can make your own if you choose. There's a DIY dipstick thread somewhere.
