Fuel door issue, not fully covered as far as I can find:
Washed the car last night to get any road salt, etc., off it from driving after recent snowfall. As I refilled the tank, I wiped down the excess water. All was well.
This morning, saw the fuel door was open. Tried to close it, it wouldn't latch. My thought was there was water someone in the mechanism which froze, opening the fuel door and keeping the latching mechanism from moving.
I moved the car into the sun, and when I got out, the fuel door was latched. It is latched so well, it will not open. I'm planning to give it a couple hours in the sun, our expected high temperature is in the 50s today, so if ice is the problem, it should be cured.
I did not know the fuel door could latch on its own.

Has anyone else experienced anything similar to this?

To my knowledge it only locks when you lock the car.

It popped open when I unlocked it just now. It's never done that before. It latches and unlatches as normal now.
This hints of central locking pump, etc. But then maybe there was ice that formed overnight. Note to self: don't' wash the car an hour before freezing is expected. If anything changes, I'll update.

It locks from the outside with the fob or key, it does not lock if you use the lock button on the dash.

I think you hit right on it, the mechanism got wet and when it froze got stuck until it de-iced. I'm sure you'll keep an eye on it for a few, if it returns without the wash job before temps drop would you please come back and let us know? Thanks!

Update: Yes, it's been working just fine. I backed the car out so its back end was in the sun. After 3 hours I went to check and it opened and closed easily, as it's supposed to. One takeaway from this is don't wash off the car as the temps are dropping to freezing. Our daytime temps will be in the 50s-low 60s the next week with no rain expected. This also reminds me to check that the drains are all clear and working.
So, don't wash the car after dark in freezing temperatures.
