Rust
Hi Guys
Got some rust bubbles on the rear arches,only at the moment on the edge where its turned under if you know what I mean.Now it seems to go round most of the wheel arch as I can feel it,I will get it sorted sooner than later,is this quite common?

you don't say what year your Xfr is, rust is not a major issue, but like most cars made of metal it's gona rust

This was a problem of the past. But some rear wheel arches still suffer. Its were the rear wing is spot welded to the inner wheel arch. Rust can start up between the joint there and rust bubbling appears on the surface of arch flange. Get your bodyshop to clean it up, spray it and get on top of it. Then check it from time to time to make sure its not coming back because it may.

its a 2005 vert,car is immaculate otherwise just the arches on the lip,only visible when you look close but I do think its surface rust so can be saved easly by a professional.

Many owners spend lots of time cleaning and polishing their cars but never clean inside the lip in wheel arches. Next time your at a car meet just walk around the cars and run your fingers along the lip and feel all that mud! The XF rear arches hold tons of wet or damp road mud in there, and its slowly rotting the car away from the inside out - when you see a rust bubble its too late, as the rust has now enetrated from the inside of the wheel arch to outside of the body; filling and repainting will often only be a temporary fix. So the lip must be kept clean and washed each time you wash the car, and also treated with a good under seal product. As Jon says, the rust will attack where the spot welds are, and spread from there. Rust spots here are common on the early XFs now, and Ive see some minor evidence on 2 front arches too. Other bad places are door bottoms on inside behind rubber surround.
Also worth noting here that these cars have a lot of bare metal underneath, not treated or painted at factory. Im talking nuts and bolts, brackets and mounts, especially on suspension parts and things attached to car body. If you crawl under youll see therse are probably covered in rust. Worth getting the wire brush on these and painting over with a good black paint like Hammerite

If you live in a damp climate then the mud etc must be cleaned out of the wheel well lips and treated to repel water damage. Mud can get trapped between the plastic liner and the lip. It gets packed in very tightly and when dry resists getting washed out, so clean them when the car has been out in the rain for a while. If paint flakes off you must do some immediate remedial action.

I have just noticed rust and some bubble on my rear left arch...I live in London and was wondering if any of you guys know a good Body shop for me to take it to. I was wondering if there is a rubber lip which can be attached to the wheel arch....many thanks.

Cant help with a body shop any more but please don't fit any trim, rubber or seal to the lip of your wheel arches. This will only trap water and mud etc. Resulting in more rust problems. Find a body shop who will derust and paint the effected panels. Ask them to wax oil from the inside around the rear arches. That's all you can do. Keep an eye on them from there on in.
