What do wheel spacers do?

They are a round slice of aluminum that fit between your hub and wheel and extend the wheel out. They are used to adapt certain types of wheels / tires, or to widen the track of the wheels, in other words, move the wheels out further from the centerline.

It seems like people ar putting them on their stock set up.

Does this improve handling, or is it just aesthetic?
