Default What is this thing that broke?

You are looking underneath the rear passenger side wheel well of my car. What is the bolt without the nut for and where does it go? (in the hole where i marked with an arrow?)

By the way, this side of the car dropped about an 3/4 of an inch than the other side.

Any help is appreciated. Planning on taking it to the dealer first thing. I just want to find out if the unscrewed bolt has anything to do with the car rear being lopsided. Don't want the dealer to give me some scare story and end up getting unnecessary work done.

Thanks in advance...

Is that a front or rear wheel?

How do the threads look on it? Do they look worn, or smashed, possibly on one side

It really looks like some sort of a brace or support, light duty. By the nature of the stamping without any type of reinforcement, I'd have a hard time believing that it did anything with a lot of stress.

I agree with apkano - doesn't look large enough to hold the cup holder on, never mind stop your car from dropping 3/4".

That round thing with the hose is your fuel filter and I think that might be the bracket that holds it in place.

Rear wheel, passenger side... tire was evenly worn and was actually getting new tires installed. when i left the shop that already had closed, i could feel like a tire was bent which made me pull out the wheels and noticed this.

I was thinking the same as that thin piece of metal couldn't have been supporting the weight of the car. I was thinking that there might be a part that fell off.

That's the fuel filter You sure ? Looks more like part of the emission system with that type of hose.

Your first post you said that side dropped about 3/4" did that happen after they put the tires on? If so It sound like they bent something. Most shops I've been to are notorious for lifting the car by the suspension parts which is not a good thing for your car.

Yes this is what's under there. I guess the Germans like those rubber hoses.

I'm not sure if it's been that way all along. One of those things you notice I suppose if you're looking for it.

I just dropped of my car and first thing they said was my rear tires are not OEM size (275-30-19). I'm hoping they don't use that as an excuse to not cover warranty.

If something is bent in the suspension, is that typically covered by warranty?

Looks like fuel filter. Something happened back there. You may have some serious issues. Keep us informed!

Just heard back from the dealer and they're saying that both my rear shocks are shot. Probably from my off-roading at the track.

Probably broke other stuff too and not just the shocks and fuel pump bracket.

What sucks now is no one has the OEM or Koni's in stock. I tried AJUSA.com and the part was going to ship out from Koni and will take 5-7 biz days.

Any suggestions where I can get them quicker?

Got under mine with a flashlight this morning (in my work clothes no less ). I didn't see this area.
I'll be putting Eibachs on in a couple of days and I'll have a good look at everything under there. I'll let you know what I find.

Cool Re: What is this thing that broke?

The bracket with the bolt is for attaching to the plastic tray which sits under your fuel pump to protect it from road dirt. In the photo I can see the tray and it looks like this has maybe dropped down. Look under your car and you will see this tray, its a big thing and you cant miss it.
Good luck!

Any chance you can take a pic for me so I can show to a tech? i spoke to the xfire tech when i picked up my car and told me that the bracket with screw not attached to anything is normal.

that pretty much made me lose confidence on what he said that it is the shocks that are the problem and I probably saved money by not replacing them since they were out of stock.

also...

1) he claims that he didn't notice the vibration that I was reported. I took it to the shop that installed my new tires and two techs felt it and spent at least an hour trying to figure it out but couldn't. I don't blame them as they don't claim to be xfire certified nor did i got charged for it.

3) also claims that my rear shocks are broken due to the plastic boot cover on top being broken. once again, two techs at discounttire did not believe it to be the case as they can feel the vibration with the car going less than 5mph (basically leaving the car on drive and let it run forward w/o stepping on the gas).

I'm hoping that the vibration that I feel is just with going with the wider tires and some rubbing happening.

I wish i had OEM wheels and tires that I can put on to troubleshoot.

TIA-

Cool thanks....

would be cool if you can take pictures while it's stock to serve as a database that folks can compare too for times like these. would be nice if the site can store it as an album and not tied to a user's photo gallery.

Talking Re: What is this thing that broke?

Its a little bracket, not the cause for vibration and loss of level setting for the car.

Where are you located, I have lots of extra wheels, lift, and could assist if you are anywhere near northern va. You could also bring your squeeze the leaves are changing, and get some points for a ride into the country.

Let me know. The height is a spring thing unless a link is disconnected or SERIOUSLY bent. Is the one side low as compared to the other 3 corners? WOODY Enjoy.

Vibration??? Odd
