My friends, the steering damper is one of the best replacement investments you can make. Dealers list this part at $651.00, and more if you pay state tax. There are a number of venues selling them from $19.90 + shipping to $31.00 free shipping. I bought 2 from Amazon and they were $27.40 each, no tax and free shipping. The stamped information on the casing showed all 4 (2 new and 2 old) to be made at the same plant in Koblenz Germany, mostly by Stabilius.
Replacement is simple if you raise the car enough to get under it (use jack stands) and turn the steering wheel to the left enough for the bolt to clear the pitman arm. A 16mm socket and box wrench are all you need, EXCEPT NO ONE HAS MENTIONED BUY A SMALL BOTTLE OF PERMATEX THREADLOCKER BLUE for re-installing the nut and bolt.
Check your old damper by pulling it out and pushing it back and you will probably get a "bubbly feeling. You also will probably see evidence of hydraulic fluid leaking. I believe the torque is 29 ft #, but the threadlocker is important as long as you get it tight.

I don't want to rain on anyone's parade, but after replacing mine (about 17k miles) I couldn't tell much difference. In fact, it feels looser to me now than it was before. I'm tempted to put the old one back on.

 

Just got the oil change at dealer - while it was there asked to look at "squeeky" front end - they are replacing under Chrysler Master waranty. cost to me $0 - TA DA!

 

I will have to say that after installing mine this weekend with 18k on the clock, I noticed the difference in hadling right away, front end just feels tighter, more responsive, and less lane drifting from road crown.

 

Just ordered mine! I have almost 50k on the clock and have been noticing that clunking sound for some time now. I also get the slight hwy drag.

 

Don't forget the Permatex Blue (Locktite) on the bolts!

My stabilizer was delivered this morn.....was gonna jack the 6 up this weekend but gonna do it when I get home. Will a 5/8 wrench do it also or just the 16mm?

 

Installed stabiizer.....very easy! Can tell a decent difference.. quicker reponse in steering.I really notice that it feels softer when i hit bumps....like new again.

 

So is JoeTLC the only place to get one of these now? I can't seem to find anywhere that sells them anymore, including autozone. I haven't checked the dealer, but I don't feel the need to shell out $600-700 for it.

 

I just installed one from Autohaus AZ yesterday, I don't know if if made any difference or not yet. the old one was firm yet but had an oily film with dirt covering the whole thing. The appearence of the new one was identicle to the old one but had a different part # printed on it. The new one was a Stabilus brand though. 46,000 miles on it.

 

How good is the quality of the one you purchased? The price with shipping is almost exactly the same as JoeTLC's.

 

I installed the stabizer from JoeTLC, on monday and noticed the change right from the getgo , also replaced the front pads with Rotex gold, no dust yet

 

Order it from Amazon.com Items over $25 ship free. It' $28.40 +/-. All are made in same plant in Germany. Be sure to get a bottle of Blue Locktite before you start.
Take old one and pull ends apart and push back together several times. You will probably feel distinct play in the shock. Push ends together and let sit for several days. Bet when you pick it up and pull ends apart you will see hydraulic fluid.

does the SRT6 have this part installed i know they modified the suspension and handling system... my car seems to have tight steering but it is kinda hard on bumps in the road.. i dont know any better as i just bought it 3 weeks ago...

 

Yes it has the same steering damper. As far as the bumps go you better get used to it especially on a rough road. That's normal for the SRT6 with it's stiff suspension and low profile tires.
