I finally got around to taking pictures of the Crossfire since we just bought a new 14 megapixel digital camera. I've been telling you guys/gals about how my wheels make a rhythmic metal on metal sound and squeak/squeal when braking (and now when going in reverse). Well, here's why:





I haven't removed the wheel myself, but I have been told by the local Chrysler dealer (who has a specialist that works on Crossfires, thank god) that the rust will work itself off just by driving the car over time. The problem is, this car is garage kept five days a week. Doesn't leave much time to work the rust off.

Is there anything I can do to remove the surface rust with a spray or something? It's really irritating me at this point.

We all get rust on our rotors if they get wet and sit for a few days.... (I am in Oregon, so they get wet often)... mine don't squeal.. that surface rust rubs off the brake surface in very few revolutions... the rest you need to clean off and then paint or treat the 'hats' and outer edges if you dont want rust.... or buy some nice already treated rotors....

 

Well I know you love your Crossfire like the rest of us so the best thing to do is just drive it to work a couple days a week when you normally wouldn't drive it. All that rust should work its way off. Good luck!

 

It's interesting that you took pics of the rear wheels. Is this where you hear the squeaking? If it is .... then you may have "rust" inside the emergency brake drums.
Try running your car with the ebrake just slightly on, and see if the squeaking diminishes after a couple of short runs. If it does, you will need to pull the rear wheels and cleanup the emergency brake drums inside. OR .... just pull the wheels and check inside the drums and the shoes ...... Hope this helps.....

 

There is a shinny spot on the outside edge of the rotor in the second pic. This could be the cause of some rubbing as the rotor turns. I may be wrong about that spot....it may be from the camera flash but the picture looks pretty clear.
