I have a 2004 coupe. I need to remove both rear wheels. What is the correct jacking point to do this? Can I jack it up from the rear center section? Di I have to jack it up on each side with 2 jacks?

 

I imagine the rear gets jacked up plenty times by the rear diff. I haven't taken the time to see how the rear is mounted to the car. Personally I jack up one side at a time at the lower control arms and use jack stands on the jacking points.

This car is rigid, I do one conner at a time but I jack using the front jack pad until the rear is high enough to put a stand under the rear jack point.

 

not sure what you are asking....if asking where you can lift the car....it has jack points in the front just to the rear of the front tire under the rocker, and the rear point is just in front of the rear tire under the rocker...as pointed out, the car is so rigid, you can place the jack at the front point, and lift the front and rear at the same time...hopes this helps, sorry if I misunderstood...

 

I'm thinking he wants to jack up both rears at the same time to rotate his nondirectional tires from side to side.

 

oh, thanks James...you can do what I suggested, just place a jack stand under the rear point on one side, then repeat by moving the jack over to the other side and repeat....if you don't have jack stands, and just the jack, you can use the rear diff, just be careful as you don't have much room under there, and you won't have much room to work the jack handle...good luck...

 

I use the diff for a jack point.... mainly because I cant get my jack under the side of the car since I lowered it.....(yes, I need another jack)... but I put jack stands under the jacking points immediately and pull the jack out......

 

Thanks for the replies everyone. I only have a floor jack and want to remove both rear tires at the same time to have the tires replaced. I was wondering if it would be safe to jack it up by the differential and then leave it like that while the tires are replaced. Should only be an hour or two to have them replaced.

 

I would invest in a set of jack stands. Floor jacks can and will let go..... It would not be a pretty site with both rear wheels off. Jack stands are pretty cheap insurance.

 

ALWAYS use jack stands. NEVER use just a jack to hold a vehicle up.

If a seal fails on the hydraulic jack, it can be damaging or deadly depending upon where you are when it happens.

Invest in a fairly nice set of jack stands, they are usually quite inexpensive.

Seals do not have to fail to leak, they leak all the time. The jack slowly goes down as I found out when I designed a jack for the nose wheel of an airplane. They jacked up the nose wheel of the plane, removed the wheel and went home for the night and returned in the morning to find the jack collapsed and the plane nose down ... oops! I got ***** and added a lock pin. Problem solved, lesson learned.
