While replacing my shocks I noticed my inner CV boot is cracked. I also found it hard to get a replacement boot kit anywhere other than the dealership. Has anyone found a boot kit for this car yet? Dealer wants about $130 for the inner boot with clamps and grease There is no outer boot kit available if you end up needing it.

I'm in Arizona and the dry intense heat kills anything made of rubber. While the outer boots aren't flexed for turning I'm worried they may rot out one day. I don't want to have to buy a new axel if it goes out.

Has anyone found aftermarket parts for the inner and outer boots? Would a universal boot kit possibly work? I've never worked on CV boots but it doesn't seem too difficult.

 

The boots are the same for the inner and outer according to the parts catalog. You can buy the boots and clamps for about $45.00 and just buy the grease at a auto parts store. You can buy a whole used axle shaft on ebay for $90 or less

 

Good to know that inner and outer are the same boot. What catalogue are you looking at? I went to the dealer since it's right near my work and I had a hard time finding the boot kit. I've typically found parts on chryslerparts.net, factory chryslerparts.com, rockauto.com.

Part # 33001. It looks like you just slip it on and cut off the extra rubber before clamping it on.

 

Front or rear? I have two rear half shafts, one with 42k and the other with 11k miles on them. Sounds cheapest to reboot them but that is a pain to do.

 

Rear inner on the driver's side is bad. Rebooting won't be fun but the worst part is getting the shaft out anyway. I tried to find remanufactured ones and they don't exist. New shafts are crazy expensive too.

I'll probably go ahead and do the outer while I've got it out. I live in AZ and anything rubber will dry all to hell out here. It will go bad eventually.

I bought the pair of 11k mile half shafts online along with the differential last fall. I replaced my diff which had a light throttle whine, and I thought that the driver outer half shaft had sprung a leak. When I replaced the shaft I had it on the bench and discovered the leak was actually a chunk of road tar stuck to the boot. I did order new crush nuts so I have one left over. So I have two good used half shafts and one new crush nut available to anybody that might want them at my cost plus shipping. I will have to go check my records on what I paid but i believe they were $65 each.........

If you dont want to screw up the rear geometry it is easiest to drop the driveline at the flex disc, unbolt the diff with the car supported,3 bolts, remove the outer shaft nut after you get the shaft uncoupled from the diff. Lower the diff on a jack. Pop the shaft out of the diff by swinging it towards the opposite side of the vehicle. Replace the shaft and reverse the instructions. Dont forget to stack any front diff shims back the way they came before tightening. you will need a couple ramps and a floor jack or a lift and a high rise tranny jack, also a 30mm 12 point socket I believe.

 

This gets even better. I went to the dealership to look for the bolts that connect the axel to the differential housing. The bolts are "not serviceable" meaning you can't buy them. Service manual says to replace the bolts which I assume means they are TTY? Looks like I have to try my chances with some thread locker, try to size some new bolts from the hardware store, or buy a brand new axel that comes with bolts (not gonna happen).

 

You have early half shafts if they bolt to the diff. easier to take out. Replacement parts may be a pain to find.
