Hi :I wonder if anybody know what kind of spare I can buy that fits in the convertible trunk. I know that Mercedes Benz slk will fit but I need to know the year and the model.Thanks. I appreciate any input.
Shown below is an ebay listing of the only Mercedes spare tire that I know of that is compatible with the Crossfire. It shows the years, models, and size. I have one in each of my coupes with a tire cover on them. There is still plenty of space to store other items. It will not fit in the my convertible trunk with the top down and the divider in place.
So I decided to double check about it fitting in the convertible. I went out in the garage and found the open space in the convertible with the divider in place is about 7 1/4 inch high. I went over to the coupe and measured the spare tire height laying down and it is approximately 5 and 3/4 inch. It appears it will fit with over an inch to spare.
Just know that any spare used on the rear might not match the OEM 19" wheel
Driving with 2 different diameters on the rear will cause serious damage to the rear differential
Keep in mind stock Crossfires do not have limited slip differentials. They have open differentials that are not impacted the same way limited slip differentials are to different size tires.
As we know, donuts are temporary spare tires. They are much smaller than your regular tires and are only meant for short distances until you can get a new full-sized tire.
My oldest son had a Pontiac Firebird (like his dad ). The donut spare tire was three inches shorter in height than the regular tire. The Crossfire rear tire is 26" tall. When inflated the donut tire shown above is 25.1" tall. The SLK320 the donut came from has a 245/40/17 rear tire and the height is 24.7”. Given spare donut tire's intended use is for short distance emergency travel it's not going to be an issue with having an open differential.
