Default Interior plastic gassing

Has anyone encountered "gassing fumes" originating from the interior? If I have the windows up, my eyes begin to "smart" and burn. There is an inorganic odor associated with the eye burning. I've tried an auto-store, close the door and open the container, type of remedy, but not successful. It's a great excuse to drive top-down, but not in all weather. Many thanks for any ideas. peace

Have you used any cleaners recently for the interior plastic or leather?

The "gassing" was present after we purchased the car...We weren't in the car long enough to get the full effect (other than the performance:-)). So, we have used the same cleaner we have used in our vehicles for ever to clean the car. It didn't do any good, so we bought an odor eliminator from Gariot's garage. That didn't solve it either. I'll replace the cabin filter, but doubt that's the cause. peace

If it smells like crayons ,It's the factory formed foam blocking that's attacted to the back side of your carpet. Black used great condition carpet was in a Crossfire part's combo deal I purchased. Wished the carpet was left out of the purchase now. Squirrel Crusher

Guess I need to crush some crayons:-). I would seriously consider the carpet being the culprit, other than the crayon odor...it's too much like fumes from burning plastic. Do your eyes begin the burn? peace

Update! I changed out the cabin filter and cleaned the blower motor area (Yes! There was debris there). While getting up close and personal with the carpet (changing out the filter), I did notice a very strong, related odor. I'm guessing a previous post referring to Germany's use of a certain foam-backed carpet, is the culprit. Oh, well! New filter and cleaned out blower-motor area is a plus. Again, thanks to the forum for all the help and insight. peace

Since it is the carpet that creates all the fumes (eyes water....), I will start the process of replacing the carpet...most anything to keep the enjoyment high. Has anyone replaced their carpet? And if so, was it replaced with OEM from Chrysler or aftermarket? I know there's a post on "How to" that I'll check after purchasing the carpet. I have seen replacement carpets from Chrysler and aftermarket, but I can't decipher their codes to know whether I'm getting the SAME carpet:-). Again, any help is appreciated. peace

I keep reading about the grayon smell from the adhesive of the carpet on the forum. I myself I have never really realized that smell or at least I never found it bothersome. If you ask me, my car after 10 years still smells like a combination of new vehicle and leather...or else a smell I would want my performance car to smell like!!!
I guess I am the only one who didn't think "oh damn my car smells like grayons!"

Thanks for the update, cars from Europe use more consumer friendly products in the cars. They have to follow strict environmental laws, all possible recyclable materials are used, way better than North American cars.

When I read this, my first thought that if the car had been detailed by a prior owner/dealer to prep it for sale, a strong cleaner and or chemical might have been used on the carpet or upholstery, and that is the source of the "gassing" smell.

Or, perhaps the carpet had been soaked wet for some reason (this is a convertible, right), and some strong cleaner had been used to cover up bad odors, and that is what is being smelled.

I can hardly believe that some original element in the car is still "gassing" after how many years? if the car is an '08, it's 7 years old. Does anyone think that an 7 year old car, a convertible even, could possibly still contain any of the original "smells" that it had from its manufacture? I cannot.

Evidently the cabin filter fixed it, so great for the owner. Also good to know for future reference.
Thanks for the posts.

Crossfire was assembled in Europe by Karmann.

You're joking, I thought they were made in China along with everything else.
I know where they were made, I'm saying they give off less irritants and pollutants than our cars here.
