Crossfire Oil Change

Later,
Re: Crossfire Oil Change
Just changed the oil and reset the FSS myself. Always had dealer do before. Found some interesting things.
1) belly pan was completely dry
2) gorilla had tightened the oil pan bolt, thought seized at first. Why ?
3) 10 qts of Mobil 1 "European" 0W-40 was $50. Have some extra but never needed any. Was cheaper than 4 1qt bottles.
4) MANN "metal free" filter HU718/5x - anyone know what the "x" means.
5) Had to be careful to get the four different sized O rings on the oil filter cap thingie. Had one medium sized O ring left over.
Interesting pricing (Amazon)
Mopar 0510 2905AB, Engine Oil Filter
by Mopar
Price: $27.95
Mann-Filter HU 718/5 X Metal-Free Oil Filter
by Mann Filter
Price: $10.69
Chrysler installed (old) filter was stamped MANN HU 718/5 (no x) & 05102905AB
Just some notes.
ps oil "weights": the higher the number, the thicker the oil.
SAE measures thickness of the oil at two points: cold and hot.
Straight weight oils have a single number and match the SAE charts both cold and hot.
Multigrade oils have two numbers: the thickness cold (W) and the thickness hot
Originally motor oils had six grades, 10 - 60. Most old cars used straight 30 (not getting into non detergent, high milage, etc). Harleys used 60 wt. Think may still have a can of 60 wt Pre-Lux). Then the chemists developed oils that did not match the two charts so were given two numbers such as 10W-30 meaning it was as thin as a 10 weight when cold but stayed as thick as a 30wt when hot. When cold it is easier to start a 10w-30 than a 30wt.
Then synthetics and high efficiency oils came along and we got half values e.g 5W-15
Finally Europeans started producing an oil that was thinner cold than the chart (for really cold climates) and we got a 0W-40.
Mobil 1 has a synthetic 0W-40 approved by Merc so I used that.

I think the Mopar filter is made by Mann, price difference is extra Chrysler profit

I believe the extra O ring goes between the filter stalk and the metal filter cap. They're almost always left over because the stalk and the cap are rarely separated, although they can be.
I did my last oil change with an extractor pulling it out of the dipstick tube. No belly pan, no gorilla-fitted drain plug. Easy.

It is amazing how dirty the filter gets, I change my oil after about 2,500 miles at the max and it still looks like this.

Re: Crossfire Oil Change
My "metal filter cap" term refers to the thing you grab with your oil filter wrench - the whole big thing on the left in your photo. The big O ring goes on it,
but I understand that you can unscrew the thin stalk (that you slide the filter on) from this external fitting. I suppose they can be damaged and may need
to be replaced. Though rarely removed, an O ring is provided in case you do. Haven't been there - haven't done it - just remember reading this somewhere
in the ethos. (Strange that I can come up with the word "ethos" yet struggle to identify
the parts as "thingys" and "whatchacallits". I think I'm missing an O ring in my head. )

Re: Crossfire Oil Change
My use of terms "metal" and "plastic" are very unofficial. I actually have no earthly idea what they're made of.
Re: Crossfire Oil Change
Found this on BenzWorld site...
re o ring
the 4 red arrows indicate the o-rings everyone changes. the stem and the oil filter cap are detatchable but hard to reassemble . there is a valve located where the 2 parts detach ( pink arrow ) it has a o-ring on it ( green arrow )
that is the one you have left over.
hope this helps !

Re: Crossfire Oil Change
People have somehow managed to snap them when changing the filter.
The part does come apart and contains a part that I did not know existed - learn something new every day or get senile.
Is this statement correct?
The plastic is upstream of the filter anyway, the oil coming up the center of the assembly, exiting through the filter and oil cooler (SRT) and then down the outer hole back to the sump.
Plastic is used more often these days in cars, look at your car if every thing on it was metal it would weigh much more, also plastic parts can be molded to shapes that metal could not be. The plastics used are not the common plastics used for containers etc, they are engineering plastics often filled with glass fibers. Go back 30 years and you could not imagine a radiator that used plastic for the end tanks, hose inlets and outlets. I have not had one of these type of tanks leak like the old brass ones did constantly.

Re: Crossfire Oil Change
Actually my Jeep (Pentastar V-6 very similar to MB M272) has a rep for breaking the plastic piece inside the cap when changing the filter. Just wanted to know if this was the same.
Re: Crossfire Oil Change
Back to the owner's manual. I haven't had the need to try this and from what I read on this forum,
the FSS reset may not be as simple as this appears.
Section 4 page 107...
The counter can also be reset by any individual after the
indicated service has been performed. To do so:
1. Turn key to the ON/RUN position.
2. Within one second press the ****/button twice.
3. The present status for days or distance is displayed.
Within 10 seconds turn the key to OFF/LOCK.
4. Press and hold the ****/button, while turning
the key to ON/RUN again. The present status for
days or distance is displayed once more. Continue
to hold the ****/button.
After approximately 10 seconds, a signal sounds and
the display shows 7,000 miles (Canada: 11,000 km) for
approximately 10 seconds.
5. Release the ****/button.
If the FSS counter was inadvertently reset, have an
authorized dealer correct it.
The message is displayed for approximately 10 seconds
when turning the key to the ON/RUN position,
or while driving when reaching the service warning
threshold. It can be canceled manually by pressing the
****/button.
Once the suggested term has passed, the message plus
either the symbol for Service A or the symbol for
Service B preceded by a – (minus symbol) blinks for
approximately 30 seconds and a signal sounds every
time when turning the key to the ON/RUN position.
The FSS display can also be called up for approximately
10 seconds with the display illuminated by
pressing the ****/button twice within one second.

Thanks! It worked fine on my xfire.

Breakage...entirely possible on any of these.
