Re: Does anyone know the part number for this item?
Try this:
170-760-04-62-7E8 bezel, there are right and left ones. You may find the Mercedes number on the back side. I found it it in the lock and hardware category. Probably better to find one at a local junk yard. The silver handle part is a different number than the black bezel.
Are you sure the cable has not come undone, or fallen out of it's brackets as it leads aft towards the outer door handle? That is not unusual.

That number is wrong according to my records, a bezel is a trim piece and on the Crossfire the passenger side part # is A193 760 01 20, driver side would be A193 760 02 20.
The OP shows the inner part called a 'recess' in the SLK parts manual and the LH part# is A170 760 02 62, RH part# is A 170 760 01 20.
The LH handle is part# A202 766 01 24, RH part# is A202 766 02 24. I'll double check all these numbers as there is a mix of Crossfire and SLK part numbers as well as the 202 model number series.
The OPs photo shows the part rotated 180 degrees.
As stated in the previous post maybe the cable has come loose or broken. as that is what it looks like with the cable unattached, the handle just sags.

Re: Does anyone know the part number for this item?
To check Cable, you remove door panel. Follow the link in 180's signature "Index of Crossfire problems, repairs and How to's". You will find a write up of how to do it.
I wouldn't believe your mechanic, because if he has not removed that door panel he does not know either!

If you need the part go to a wreckers yard, get the recess and the handle assembly, I think the cable is probably broken though.
The only way to find out is by removing the door panel.
