Default Is sticky key inevitable

Had my '05 XF for a year now. Don't know if sticky key mod done. 43000 miles.

Is this inevitable or are there 04 to 06 owners who have not had this happen?

May have been answered elsewhere but all see are the warnings and post on those who have done it or had the problem.

While it is not 100% guaranteed that it will happen, do you want it to happen when you are in the boonies with no tools ?

FWIW, I noticed my key was getting worse and worse on the black srt, and truly didnt want the key to break off in the switch. I had postponed it for quite a while, but I am happy that we did it. It is still a little difficult to turn at times, but usually a slight bump of the steering wheel will allow for smooth key turns. The other 2 crossies have no issues with the key, smooth as silk.

What years? They fixed this in later years.

Ala_xfire, point well taken.

I know 07 and 08's do not have the problem, not sure about the 06's, but I think they are OK too.
Anyone ?

The production change was not made official, but we believe the change was made sometime in the later production of the 06 model year.

Yours will eventually fail, I'd be almost certain of that. The fix is easy, there are many of us here who can talk you thru any problem you have. OR, you can print the instructions and hand them to any friend or brother-in-law who is handy with tools and it will be fixed in an hour.

OR......you can ignore what is an easy fix - and when it locks up, the easy fix is then a difficult job. I am happy to help with the pre-emptive fix, but I do not assist with, "It's locked up and I'm drilling the pin out" It's too much work and frustration - and I don't waste my time with people who were told about it before and still won't listen. Life is too short for stupid.

Take care of it now.

Had my 2004 Coupe for 11 years
Never any problems with the ignition driving it to 111,000 miles
That's a lot of key turns !!
Sold it last March for another Crossfire
I now have a 2005 Roadster with 59000 miles
No issues with this ignition either
I've been fortunate I guess
I'm not confident in doing the simple fix myself but if someone experienced would offer to do it for me I would let them do it and reward them in someway for their time.
It's always in the back of my mind that it might lock up especially when I travel far from home
If my ignition ever even once gets caught even slightly I'll consider this to be done immediately

I'm handy just not a lot of free time.

Short of pull dash any easy way to check if this has already been done? Vehicle had two prior owners but vehicle bought from a dealer so don't have contact info for them.

Take the cover off the end of the dash, drivers' side (covers fuses for ICM).
Does the fuse box label say "Sticky KeY"? If so, it has been fixed.

If not, i'ts not been fixed or it's been fixed but they forgot to make a note of it.
If it does not say "Sticky Key Fix done on _ _ _ ), the only way to know is to follow hte procedure and get in there and see.
