Default Broke My Fuel Door and have a few questions about the FIX

I did find the write up but before I climb into the hatch area I need to know if I need to have another unit in hand or if most have been able to fix it once they get it in hand. I am assuming it all has to be removed regardless just looking for ANY Pointers with getting it out without doing more damage in the process. I started to just use velcro (ok, I did that) but cant leave it that way for long.

I do not understand your problem. What did you break?

Let me explain, the other day in the mad rush to get fuel I somehow broke the fuel door. It just will not stay closed even if you look the car. No strap on the cap to get in the way. I read the write up and the manual and I have been in the hatch but the only response to your writeup with the Gent that superglued the hinge and was "back on the road" again. I am afraid I may do more damage with the yellow hose and other parts so I was asking for any other advise that you may have since the writeup. I see the steps as this:

1.get in the hatch and find the tab on the locking part that passes though and push tab, turn and pull out.
2. I cant seem to see how to release the other part that the hose goes to but get that part out
3.remove gas cap, vent hose, air hose and press the 4 tabs so the unit can be pulled out from the outside (no screws, just tabs)
4. hopefully the spring arm is broken and I can jb weld it back on and reverse the above process to install.

Bump...to the top. I need help. I get that I get in the hatch and press the locking tab to release the locking part that is inside by the cap.

HOW do I remove the part with the air hose going to it? After that I just make sure the 4 locking tabs are pushed down and pull the entire unit away from the car, is that correct?? I really want to get this done since I have the rear panels out already.

All I know is that the pipe that the air hose attaches to is easily broken if you try to pull it apart. I believe it is best to cut the hose and replace the hose at assembly. Use *6mm urethane hose.
Does the door spring open or does it flop about?
Is it the catch that is broken?
I am having a hard time seeing your problem, if you took a photo would that help us?

the door feels like it does not have the spring anymore. It will lock and unlock but it will not stay closed like before so I am assuming the spring somehow is broken. I am using velcro on the inside to keep it closed.

To remove the first thing I need to do is press the locking tab from the inside of the truck and push the cylinder outward toward the cap , correct?

What is the next step? How do I remove the large part that the hose goes to ? Does it fall out once the other part is removed?

After I get that out they I have to 4 locking tabs to push down so the entire part will separate from the car and I can see the spring area I assume, is that correct?
so the 2nd step of getting the part with the hose attached is where I am stuck at this point. I will consider cutting the air hose to avoid damage. I have the rear panels out so I want to get this fixed and enjoy the car.

Thanks for the help. GG in TN

When the car is running the gas cap does not lock. It will only lock when the car is locked using the fob. You must cut the hose and either join it back together with it pushed into a bigger hose or replace it.

the lock does work with the fob but before i broke it you had to push the lid in and it would spring out, and when you closed it you would do the same. It feels like maybe the spring has let go in the hinge so i have to remove the assembly to take a look.

Is that correct? All the sudden it feels like nothing is holding it or it just flops really.

Once I take the lock out by pressing down the locking tab does the part that has the hose come out at the same time? Last question, promise!

I cannot help you really, as I never looked at that part. Use a mirror to look at the inside parts maybe you will get a hint of what to do.
I really would like to help someone who did not last 24 hours on the SLK forum before being banned. What the heck did you say?,

LoL . . that hurts. It was my ID, they did not like it I guess. I did learn some cool stuff while I was there. I just dont want to put the rear panels back in until I address the issue at hand and the service manual is not helpful. have you removed the unit before? I see you had mentioned you did not see the hardware that attaches it to the car. I am old, overweight and broke down but if I put it back together I will never attempt to fix it. I am using velcro to keep it shut now. . sorta sad. I am attempting new drilled rotors, pads, painted calipers and could not even get the bolts to finish, thats another story in itself.

Hey VBUSA, maybe there is a link somewhere on this forum to those expanded assembly drawings of the gas door that you could study. That’s where I would start.
