never noticed this till recently

i've only read the owner's manual to solve earlier problems with the car. since my owner's manual is with the car at a transmission shop right now, could anybody explain what the digital area circled in green is? my thought is that it stands for "Drive" in an automatic or something. i have a 6-speed, so please tell me if i'm right. and if i am, is it just wasted space in the manual crossfires? sorry if you find this question/post ridiculous in any way.
But only if you change it from the standard Drive position. If you put it in drive it will be in first, but it will read D, but if you autostick down it will say
1, 2, 3, 4, D.
1, 2, 3, 4, D.
well i guess it's useless for me. i wish they could have made it useful for the MTs. they could have put a tach light or indicator of some sorts to tell you when to change gears. i know it's minor, but don't just leave a blank digital space.
