Looks sharp. So what was the cost for the install?

Pretty hefty...$900, I thnk the paint was a little mroe than I expected ($200) but there's not much you can really do when you have a pretty outrageous idea.

Still, the cost of the unit and custom install was about on par with what you would pay for this unit at retail cost and installed. Plus I have something that's one-of-a-kind

You certainly do. And it really looks great! Very nicely designed. Congrats.

Updated background pic with a nice Crossfire theme.

Also, I put in some new pedals

Thumbs up Re: Custom A/V - Interior Project

Can you give us any more details about the custom fab job and paint on the console? Was it a new custom fiberglass/resin job molded from the original or was the original chopped and patched? Was the original harness extended for the relocated controls? Was the dash frame clear behind the controls for the double-din or did the frame need to be mod'd too? And how in the world did you guys match that paint? I tried at one point... without any luck.

So many questions... sorry. But I hope you'll share.

By the way it looks GREAT!

Good question . . . . did the area behind the dash bezel require any modification to fit the double din unit?

The original was chopped and patched with a resin mold

Right
Was the dash frame clear behind the controls for the double-din or did the frame need to be mod'd too?
That I am unsure of. I know that they created a custom bracket for the unit. I also lost my change holder because the double DIN unit pushed up against the back of the holder when pushed in (not that big of a loss)

There's no paint code for the interior for shops to use so they got the closest match possible and sprayed the whole console. You can tell a difference when looking at the other trim but you would never know
.

Very nice. Worth every penny. I did installs back in the day, and it's incredible what can be done now. It's alot cleaner and less messy now. Don't you just love innovation. Tell your installer he did a great job. That's from a MECP installer certified in the first testing session ever in phoenix back in 1990. We had to build all our relays from scratch, in the snow, uphill, etc...

GatorLCA, any chance you could ask the installer what, if any, modifications were required behind the dash? I just bought an 07 coupe and I'm researching and planning to do a similar mod myself. Any information you can gleam from them would be very helpful to me and I'm sure other members of the forum are interested.

Sure, I can ask him, but I don't think there was much if any modification done since the console is deep enough for AM units. The only problem area is the change holder since that sits pretty far back in the console.

I thought it was reasonable for what I was trying to do, (though the paint was a little much, but he didn't do it so there's not much I can do about the paint price). Ended up around $2,000 for the Head Unit and Install, not bad since some of these touchscreen units retail brand new for about $1,500 - $2,000 depending on which one you get and if there's no modification being done a standard install of one of these is like $250 due to the wiring.

I was worried about the bottom half, where the switches are, not having the depth needed for the AM double-din unit.

I'm planning to relocate the switches to replace the coin holder/ashtray, air bag light, and cigaretter lighter. I'll build a segment in the glove compartent on the side closest the driver for coins and eliminate or relocate the air bag light (don't have and never will have kids). I have a two-port 12V accessory plug that I'll mount up under the passenger foot well.

I'm going to do the work myself and maybe take the epoxy/fiberglass pieces to a body shop for paint. I'll document the whole process when I get started.

Gator the head unit instalation looks great . Nice job. I have the flip up screens in both SRT's with nav and touchscreen. They cost about the same $2000 plus.

Hope to see you up in New Smyrna next month.

It is amazing the things one does to their XF's to personalize them. Wait till you see Ashley's XF.

I've been digging for information before doing a dash modification myself. My biggest worry is what exactly is behind the switches below the factory radio. I'll be pulling the radio and bezel in my car this weekend. In the mean time I'm trying to learn as much as I can. I found this:

Does anyone know what that silver box with the orange label in the center is?
