upgrading the infinity sound system
hello all
ive got an 06 limited with the infinity sound system. whats the ease of upgrading the sound system? i had a nissan 350z with the bose system and i was told that basically you would have to upgrade almost everything at once because bose is weird like that, uses odd ohms or something. but yea, thats my question.
thanks in advance!

Depends on what you want to upgrade. If you're looking to run more than 240 watts of speaker in the car, it makes little sense to upgrade in a piecemeal fashion.
But there are a lot of (cheapish) mods you can do to get the most out of the current getup, starting with putting in better aftermarket speakers. There's a popular mod to the front speakers. Options for the subwoofers are somewhat limited, but it is possible.

The question is: How much money do you like to invest?

The reason your Bose system was extensive to upgrade is bacause of the way the speakers are amplified. In a bose system, they typically have a small amp integrated into each speaker, meaning there is no central smp powering everything. This means you MUST typically use new speakers and an amp at the least, and usually a head unit as well.
They also use strange Ohm ratings sometimes, such a 6 (halfway between a typical car speaker and a home speaker).
As others have said, figure out what you want to spend and how much you care about fidelity vs. volume.

The easiest way to get a good sounding system is to replace the head unit and correct the factory power amp wiring. You can get a fairly good head unit for less than $200.00. The factory head unit to power amp wiring has only FRONT speaker wires going to the power amp. There is a splice (located under the passenger floor cover) that connects the head unit front speaker wires to both the front speaker and sub woofer inputs on the power amp. Remove the splice on the front speaker wires and install RCA plugs on the FRONT speaker wires and the SUB WOOFER wires, going to the power amp. Plug these into the FRONT speaker and SUB WOOFER preamp (RCA jacks) on your new head unit. You can adjust the sub woofer and front speakers independently. It'll sound great.
One more piece of advice, when you pick out a new head unit, make sure it has at least 4 or 5 volt pre-amp signal levels. The Infinity power amp requires this.

This is a question for all the afectionados! My aftermarket stereo has 3 separate outputs: fronts, rears, and subs. I have already did the rca plug mod to the amp. Which of these six head unit rca plugs should I connect to the 4 amplifier plugs? Thanks in advance for your responses!

Okay browsing stereo's.. seems to be a real lack of silver faced HU options.
"But" if you delve into the marine grade units.. double doors swung wide open. Anyone played this route? Since they list as "din sized" I'm guessing they would fit?
Sorry for the long delay in responding. Things came up and prevented me from doing it when I wanted to. But now that it has been done; I am not happy with the sound. something is missing . I am getting all the highs but the midrange seems to be non-existent. Only at high sound levels can I get some response in the midrange; but it's still not a lot. Going to play with different options. One thing that was already done before this change was to put those resistors on the door speakers. Maybe I will remove them first and see what response I get. Any inputs?

I also got mine from Crutchfield. The blue ones. as far as wiring goes; I cut the wires 4 inches from the amp as suggested. that is where I put my RCA connectors. The HU allows me to adjust frequency for the subwoofers.
