Biggest stereo bang for the buck mod
pizzaguy, did you decide whitch one you liked more. i think ill go w the 470s. the 330s are 130hz i believe and that seems a lil too high to me. i think 90-100hz would be perfect.
I really thought I liked the 470's more. And I did a 260 mile day trip yesterday - and I am now convinced I made the right move!
For me, 470's did it! (I ran with the bass at +5 and treble at 0 - sounds much better to me, bass is strong from the sub-woofers, but the door speakers are clear now.)
I NOW have CD quality sound when listening to CD's.

Installed the 300mhz bass blocker last night. Took 10 mins per side. Its as if the German design team knew we were going to make the mod....that panel access made it a no brainer. Awesome suggestion!

I have to agree, this is much better than the mid-bass roll off with the 330's I had previously.
Amazon sells electronic parts now?
What DON'T they sell?
----
I put 60-some miles on this weekend, still cant believe the difference. The van and pickup's systems sure sound crappy now by comparison.

Installed a 300 bass blocker. Sounds EXCELLENT for music but lacking if you listen to AM talk radio. Dennis Prager for President, Michael Savage for VP!!!
Any of you all have a crutchfield referral code?
Along with your name and address. My wife will be placing an order and I would like to take advantage of the savings
You will also get a $20 savings as well.
THanks
Nate

Just had Car Toys install the 220's ($54). Very nice improvement. After playing with the extreamly limited equilizer (where's the mid-sweep Chrysler?), I've decided it sounds just a hair "hollow". I've ordered the 330's from Amazon ($15 total). These should be about as good as it gets with this system. Car Toys will install them at no additional charge.
Please add me to the list of happy "modies". The stock stereo system was ok but definately lacked, I found this today as I was searching for subwoofer ideas and WOW! I tried 220 ufs but it lacked too much lower mid range at my normal "old man" volumes. Installed 470s and the mirrors still shake but overall I am VERY impressed! For the time and money this is a definate winner. I am going to try 330s just to see what suits me.
Just put 270's in courtesy of Mister Taz. Huge improvement.........took about 10 mins per side. Many thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread and especially to Paul for sending me the caps! Gotta luv this forum!!!
Just did this mod this afternoon after putting it off for over a year - used 330's and the change is amazing. Cheap - Quick and Easy. If you have not done it yet don't put it off any longer.
Just to confirm, am I correct on the items needed for this mod:
1. One capacitor for each door
2. Insulating tube for the exposed wires
3. Soldering tool and related stuff
Thanks.

Yea, maybe a small flat blade screwdriver to pop the cover off over the connectors, but tha'ts about it.
Many guys don't bother to solder, just use crimp connectors. I can't remember now, I THINK I soldered mine... not sure now.

Yea, just to be sure, after trying a 235 or so, I ordered 330's and 470's. Turns out, my ears like the 470's the best. I put on quick-disconnect mating connectors and tried each size, most stuff I listen to sounded best with 470's and talk radio sounds good, too. (Talk radio isn't all the critical, of course, but MUSIC sure sounds better this way!)

Replaced my head unit last January with an Alpine-iPod unit. That made such a difference I didn't put in the capacitors I had purchased the week before. Finally got off my duff and did the install. WOW, what a difference! I can actually feel the subs behind the seat and the door speakers aren't shaking the mirrors off the car. Can't wait to take another road trip so I can listen to all my music.
3 inches - My 330's were no where near that size - and I did not solder only used crimp connectors - insulated the bear wires of the capacitor with the wire coating stripped off the small piece of wire I attached to the capacitor for ease of installation. Very quick and easy - no make that simple.
This is what I used:
