Question Re: Biggest stereo bang for the buck mod

This thread is great, but I'm still a little confused. I'm used to crossover lingo in terms of Hz and dB per octave. If I want a high-pass crossover in the 150-200 Hz range, what is my best choice of capacitor? I'm afraid a drop in anything above 200 Hz would make the fronts too weak.

Did you read the early posts? Pelked1 did a great job on it. I just did a bit of empirical experimentation to find my choice of cap value.

I just finished reading through the first several pages again. It's a lot of reading. I found the formula...some uncertainty about the ohms rating for the speakers (debate about 2 or 4), but based on all the different feedback, I'm thinking the 270 uF is going to be just right for my taste. For a 4 ohms rating, that puts it at 147 Hz (295 @ 2 ohms).

Anyway, I think I want a couple of your caps. I'll PM you when I'm ready.

Pelked1
What's the install gouge if going with the Crutchfield pre wired caps (Bass Blockers) ? Install photos only address splicing the caps inline with speakers. Will I have to go directly to the amp with the pre wired caps ?
Thanks in advance. 2005 Rag Top

$6 a pair mailed. You will have to come up with connectors. PM me and I'll send them forthwith. and post haste. I'll even throw in some spaghetti sized heatshrink tubing!

Anyone else reading this, I have ~33 pair to go to good homes. I'm not making any money on this, so no complaints! OK?

Paypal works for me.
You have any left to sell?

I've got plenty. PM me with your real name and address? This last round of folks sent money via PayPal and somehow expected me to know whose real name lined up with their username. A bit confusing!

This is another call for those who haven't received the caps they paid for.

I just today got an envelope back, postmarked 7/02 sent to Steve Burgess.

I recognize the name, but can't place the username. Did I send replacements?

Let me know.

I went with two 470 uF's in series, making a non-polarized cap out of two polarized caps. This gives me a 235 uF cap.

I don't like it - took TOO MUCH bass out, IMO.

But I did something else, I only did ONE speaker, the driver's side. Gonna drive around and play with it (using the balance control to switch sides and compare) for a few days.

I THINK about a 330uF or so might be about right - I agree that there is too much bass as the factory set it up, but the 235uF I have in there is too little, and takes TOO much out.

WOW! That was quick, my order is here! (Mouser.com)

I ordered 330's and 470's. Tried a 330 and like it. Have STILL only done the driver's side. Gonna do the passenger side tonight, after I finish the never-finished lawn.

I made mine with quick-connect male/female connectors, and put same connectors in the wiring - so I can take a cap out without tools and mate the wires together easily, should I ever want to (or if a cap goes bad).

Not sure I can provide pics, as my camera does not do close-ups well.

The 330's are part number 647-UVP1J331MHD from Mouser.com - anyone who wants to order them, can do so with that number. $1.26 each and $7 for shipping. (Expensive? Yes. But they ARE good parts, are non-polarized and mouser ships NOW - not weeks from now. This is something like my 10th order in the last four years - they are always quick.)

Screwed around and screwed around - ended up with the 470's in there.

I sure am fussy.

I gather you mean 2 in parallel: 235 uF?

No, I ordered two 330's and two 470's from Mouser the other day. Put quick-connect plugs on all four caps and played around in the garage today for about an hour.

The Mouser part for the:

470's is 647-UVP1V471MHD
330's is 647-UVP1J331MHD

WOW! Drove for the first time tonight with the caps in there. What a difference! Playing around in the garage just didn't quite do it justice, running around town with the top down and sound up really showed the difference.

I guess, depending on the music you listen to and just how screwed up your hearing is -either 330's or 470's really do the job. IMO, anyway.
