Engine knocks when I start it
Hey people,
I have a 2004 crossfire limited that knocks when I start it. It goes away within 5 to 10 sec. but it's loud enough to turn heads in the parking lot when it starts. It seems to be the worst after having sat for 3 or 4 hours.
Chrylser is telling me that it is a normal part of vehicle operation and don't want to repair it. I personally have never heard a car with only 13,600 miles on it knock when it's started so I don't know where they are getting that from. Now they are assigning a mediator to my case to get it resolved.
My question is: Is anyone else having this problem and if so, have you tried to get a resolution to it and what was your outcome?
Thanks in advance for your replies.

Yeah it's normal, but it might get louder at different temperatures, any change in cold weather to hot weather?
I'm not sure if it's piston slap, loud fuel injectors, clutch through out bearing or something else, let us know what you find out.

My daughter bought a Hyundai Sonata V-6 with 11,000 miles on it and we also noticed a knocking noise when she first started it. Her problem turned out to be the timing belt tensioner that they replaced under warranty. I'm not sure what we have in our Crossfires, does anyone know if we have a timing belt or chain?

I just don't see how this loud of knock can be normal. In all the cars in all my life I've never heard an engine knock like this unless it's got 150,000 miles on it or a collapsed lifter or something. It is much worse on hot weather, specifically 70 degrees and hotter. I've have even been told that there is a small puff of smoke out of the exhaust right when she fires up.

Mine does the same thing, although not loud enough to turn heads. It's done it since bought the car new. I now have 45,000 miles on it and it seems no worse. If you don't trust the dealer, find an independent MB mechanic and ask him to take a listen and tell you if its normal or not. I imagine they would do it free of charge.
Ok, try this exercise and let us know how your engine is working after a little while.
Start your car, rev the engine while at a stop, and shut it off. Let the car sit for a few hours. There is unburned gas on the cylinders that can ruin metal.

I think your reaching for an answer, but we don't really know what the sound is unless he posts a sound file.
I've seen lots of honda ricer kids rev their engine before they shut it off, it becomes a habit, but they do it for the sound. I used to do it on my saturn, not on the xfire though.

If you've ever heard an engine with a collapsed lifter that is the sound I hear. It goes away fast , 5 - 10 seconds, but it is literally loud enough to turn heads. I have gotten several comments from co-workers who have been heading to their cars when I am starting mine. Knowing that this engine is right out of a Mercedes, I find it hard to believe that a Mercedes buyer would have to tolerate a car that makes people look and go "what's wrong with your car?" when they start it.
It is NOT normal to hear an engine "knock" when you start your XFire although it does always have some valve slap noise.
Check your oil, make sure it is full.
As someone else suggested, take it to an independent MB Master mechanic and get an educated opinion.
Good luck and let us know what transpires.

I too hear Valve Train Noise when starting the engine, but not knocking; especially from people passing by!
