LKQ sells Crossfire speedo's on Ebay. I thought this was illegal!
As any dealer could buy such a lower mileage speedo and put it in a car and lie about the mileage. In CT we have laws that says the speedo that goes in to replace a busted one must be new and set to the actual mileage. Has anybody been burned buying a used crossfire with this speedo swap?

The Odometer mileage is actually stored in a few place within the electronic lexicon of computers and controllers. It's stored in the ECU, The ABS Control Module, the Body Control Module and another undisclosed location that can't be traced. That way, even if you had to replace all three of those mentioned parts, the car would still show accurate odometer mileage. Rolling back the odometer on one of these cars would take MB Engineer or a Rocket Scientist/Super Hacker with DBR machine...
Rest easy, your chances of being a victim of odometer fraud this day in time are about as good as winning the Mega Millions jackpot. Consumer Protection groups like consumer reports and Carfax still preach to beware the evil car salespeople and shady mechanics. The only reason they do is the same reason that you only see bad news on TV, fear sells and Carfax and Consumer Reports are not non profit companies, so they need to sell...

cluster replaced when the gas gauge low indicator illuminator went out.
When I got the car back, I found that it had about 1500 miles less on the
Odometer than when I had brought it in for service.
The reason this happened is this... I had taken the vehicle in to have a "light" replaced, and was told the instrument cluster would have to be
replaced. There was not one in stock, and I didn't feel like leaving my
car with them for a week while we waited for the cluster to arrive. I drove
the car an additional 1500 miles (roughly) between the time the cluster
was ordered and when I brought the car in to have it installed. When I
asked about the difference I was told that the mileage displayed on the
cluster was set at the distributor at the time of order, and that the car
was expected to be "down" between order and installation so that the
mileage would be correct. As I had continued to drive my car during this
period, the mileage displayed on the new cluster was off by a little over
1,500 miles.
So, am I screwed if I sign an odo statement at the time of sale?

Hmm, that's interesting. Perhaps MB does things differently. I've worked on many cars, and have never seen that happen before. My Neons, Celica and RX-7 all went back to the correct mileage after being redone...
I stand corrected...
I wouldn't worry too much about the difference in mileage. As long as you plan on keeping it for a while. The only way that would be a problem is if it went back to a lower mileage than when you bought it. Technically the dealer ship should have put a Odometer Replacement disclosure somewhere on the car with the mileage at the time it was pulled out.

I can't even begin to tell you about the horrible thoughts going through my mind when I saw the headline. LKQ sells Crossfired speedos on Ebay...
Oh My God! They would have to be small and relatively tight And used, disgusting.
Definitely too much info...then I realized you were talking about speedometers...LMAO...

^^^ Ah so it does happen. Hmmm. I think some of these low mileage SRTs on Ebay are scam cars with much much more mileage. I've seen some with like 3 miles. Gimme a break. I was considering an SRT but there is no way to be sure the mileage is accurate.

not for another 30 years). In fact, when I wear out this motor, I plan to
install another and keep driving the car. I just like it that much. As for
the Odometer being set below the mileage at which I bought the car, that
would be a hoot, to see it back below 8 total miles. Hehehe, I'll be turning
50K miles sometime today or tomorrow. Hmmm, I wonder if an SLK55
AMG motor will fit in the SRT-6? Anyone for a blown V8 in a Crossfire?

The mileage can be in the cluster. it is that way in modern gm vehicles, it could be stored in multiple locations however but you could have purchased the car before ever getting that deep... Its the 70's all over again.

"I AM SELLING A INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OUT OF '06 CROSSFIRE SRT-6 .THIS INSTRUMENT CLUSTER HAS UNDER 5,000 MILES ON IT AND THIS WILL CHANGE YOUR MILES."
Let's hope you're right and he's wrong. And eBay really should monitor these kinds of listings better, IMHO. Actually inviting buyers to commit fraud would seem to be just a little too awkward for the site to tolerate or accept.
