Looking for more storage in hatch?
During all the years I have been driving, I like to carry a certain amount of items in case of emergency, not just mine most of the time, but to help others as well. Putting items I wanted in the Crossfire looked tacky. So to the wood scrap pile I pulled out some 1 x 4 boards. Did some measuring, nailing, gluing, & painting, I came up with this. The center supports are located so any of the jack componets can be removed without much trouble. I had some small pieces of auto carpet left over from a job and just layed them in the compartments to minimize noise. I put a foam rubber strip all along the top so the original cover will lay flat and secure. So far, driving it a few days, I have not noticed any noise or rattles. A 'false bottom' is what I call it. To do over again, I would make a few minor changes, but you get the idea.
Sorry for the bad pics, but the sun was in the way when I had this apart today.

Great idea and good job.
As long as nothing rattles ya got a perfect set up here.
Maybe you could provide the measurements here for some of us less creative folks to try to build from.

Nice job, James!
I'll admit, it drives me crazy when I place just one item back there & then listen to it slam around whilst driving. This little idea would help stop that problem!

All of that stuff would fit nicely in a duffel bag and take up much less room in the long run........plus, you could grab it to use in another car when necessary. I appreciate the work that you put into it, but you ended up with a lot more 'wasted' space.

I had thought about getting a 3 or 4 inch piece of black high density foam and cutting it to the size of the floor. Then cut some slots into it for the laptop case and other things. I hate stuff sliding around too.
I liked this idea a lot. So when I was installing my subwoofer I built a storage drawer to go underneath the new floor panel that I made (because the existing floor panel is way too thin to bolt the subwoofer..
I cut a piece of 3/4" plywood to fit the floor in the cargo area. then I covered it with carpet that matches the factory material and color.
I bolted my subwoofer unit to the new floor panel and put it on top of the storage drawer. (The old floor panel is still in the original position covering the storage area beneath it.)

I put blocks on the underside of the new floor to interlock it to the storage drawer.

The cover flips up (with subwoofer attached), clears everything, and can be propped open while accessing the stored goods.

It is amazing how much you can store in a 3.5" tall storage area. It works great and it is not WASTED SPACE - IT IS WORTH EVERY INCH OF IT!
I have since organized it with almost every tool I would need to make a minor repair or help others.
Looks good. James
PS PPRO - my only concern about your set-up is how do you easily get to your spare tire hardware/tools? You mentioned the original panel was still in place.

I think having this space under the floor may actually increase cargo space because all the less frequently used stuff is condensed into a small out of the way space. That leaves the cargo area totally free for whatever stuff you want. My "fitted" luggage still fits, and my laptop roll-away and suit bag (my flight gear) fit too.
Before, I had all this miscellaneous stuff in there - it was a mess. Now it looks almost too clean.
I'm thinking of making my own cargo curtain from another piece of carpet. If I can find a shade roller wide enough it should be pretty easy. I wouldn't mind paying the $250 if I have to but why not make it myself if I can?

James.
Thank you for the great idea.
This is my version of your installation.
It is great for carrying those "extra things" that you might wish you had.. just in-case.

Bruce, very nice job, I'm glad it worked out for you. I have since went and bought and/or sorted through extra tools I have and feel I have most tools needed to make a repair or help others stranded.
My first design was nearly exactly like yours but found out I had to space the frame away from the edges. I realized the factory floor cover did not have the hard board backing all the way to the edges so I had to compensate.
Nice job, James
