Over the shoulder creak. Dear god its maddening!
Before everyone jumps on me...I know there was a thread about this problem before. It was a good thread but no one ever said what ended up happening in the end. I have this small (but soooo annoying) creak/rattle coming from somewhere over my left shoulder. to me it sounds like where the seatbelt bracket is. divets and other road imperfections make it worse and I'm going crazy. I am still under warranty, but it would be nice to have some specifics to give the service dept. Anyone?

Ben Gay seems to help.
Sorry, I just couldn't resist.
roadster with a stick
Just thought the thread could use a bump.
Most people and myself use silicon spray. Use a lot of it on the areas where the black seat belt housing meets the interior paneling. That seemed to quiet it down about 80%. Others took their car into the dealer to have them take off the housing and put padding under it. I tried this myself, but couldn't get the housing off completely so I'm not sure how well that works. Plastic on plastic contract is a major no no in the automotive world, so why they did that here I don't know.
I had the same problem i jammed a small piece of paper in the gray part where the seat belt cover thing screws in and it tightened it up so it stopped making noise idk if that is helpful at all.
~ it seems to be coming from the seat belt area trim or around the quarter window... i had removed both trim pieces and added foam padding (adhesive on one side) and this did the trick... bmw uses this stuff on most contact (plastic to plastic) points.
cheers!
cheers!
I had both seat belt trim pieces off recently and noticed that it had some factory installed fiber padding glued to the underside...I didn't have a creak, just had it off to install roll bars. My car is an 05, so it maybe something that wasn't on the 04's?

Here is what my solution looks like.
I could not find any adhesive felt thin enough so I used pieces of Velcro (soft side).
Remove the door pillar bracket (3 Torx screws).
Loosen the brass Philips screw inside of the seat belt port.
Note: do not remove it fully, you don’t want to loose it down behind the belt tensioning mechanism.
Pull lightly and insert the soft Velcro in two areas:
1-On the bulkhead, wrap around 2 sides and the top.
2-The window pillar trim (This is a very noisy conact point)
Re-tighten brass screw, replace the door pillar bracket.
Nice and quiet...
I will start a new thread on how to quiet down the door pannels.
Do both in about 2 hours and you will be a happy owner of a XF again.
I am!!!

Fired Up....Youre awesome. great instructions. I just picked my car up from the dealer where they supposedly fixed the creak. I'm not sure what they fixed but it wasnt the creak in the seatbelts. Great instructions. If that fails, I will use ppro's more time saving fix.

Check out the door panel creak solution insructions I posted.
This will make it nice and quiet, it will be like a whole new car.

This is probably a ridiculous question, but when you applied the velcro to the areas, did you remove the backing of the velcro so it would stick or did you leave it on?
Does it sound like creaking plastic or something else.
One other issue if your seat is driven all the way back into the plastic cap on the bulkhead, you may also be inducing creaking from the force of the seat.

You've gotta be getting soooo tired of me now. It just sounds like a combo of a creak and a ticking sound that, to me, sounds like it is coming from the window pillar area that has the velcro piece all the way around it. I had it so well padded that I really cant believe it wasnt any better. Would losening the torx screws a bit help alleviate some of the pressure forcing the pieces together?
If you’ve got the window pillar well padded and the bulkhead wrapped both sides and top, then that should do it. One more option is that the creaking is coming from the door panel just at the latch housing. Try applying some Velcro as I show in this thread. This is a notorious creaking point. This can be mistaken for the bulkhead or window pillar creak.

There is also a TSB for the window pillar rivet. This may also be a source of trouble depending on the year Xfire you have.
Look at the 4th post on this thread.
TSB 23-001-05 issued 1/8/05

Well, I am brining the car in @ the beggining of next week anyway for the headlights to be replaced so I will bring the thread and info regarding that TSB. Hopefully (I dont know why they wouldnt) they will fix according to the TSB. The description of the creaking in that link you sent me is EXACTLY how I would describe mine. Your advice on the padding seemed like the fix. Since it wasnt I cant help but think this TSB will sort things out. Tested the door panel theory while driving w/ the door open and it's definately coming from the rear 1/4 window area. Thanks for all of you help so far. I will let you know what happens next week. If the TSB doesnt do it, you will probably see a story about me doing something illegal out of frustration on CNN or MSNBC Nightly News.
Well...it's all over. finally. Took the car in this past week for the TSB you sent me and voila! no more popping noise on either side. Im back in love! Thanks for all of your help everyone (esp. Fired Up)

Glad to help
I have been helped so much by this forum and the contributers, over the last year that I feel it is my duty to lend a hand when I can.
