Default Side exhaust?

As I was drifting off to sleep the other night, I had 2 ideas pop in my head, only one of which I can remember. How about side exit exhaust? Kinda like the old corvettes? Would it look too trashy? Or would it be sporty? One issue I know of would be that you (and your passengers) will have to mind their pants leg as they exit, unless it has some sort of cover.

Scott, I can honestly say I have thought about this before and think it MAY be a great idea depending on how difficult it would be to route.

I was really hoping one of the photoshop experts would be kind enough to render us a little something :-)

Thanks.

There ya go, courtesy of FP's photo shop and Fritz's beautiful Alabaster coupe.
I've had side pipes on my AMX since 1971, and they only "melted" my old girlfriends panty hose once and she learned how not to come in contact with them ever again.

This was in my thoughts as well. I was thinking the old flat black style of Corvette side pipes but done with either powder coat or some other nicer looking finish. The one thing that keep me from seriously looking into it was ..what about the rear end? The rear setup is still very unique looking and it makes the rear of the car. So you would have to figure out what to do with the empty space where the exhaust tips once were. It would also depend on the sound. I wouldn't want to go to that expense only to have it sound crappy.

Pat, that's always been my concern too. I think a cross-over pipe would be needed for sure, or else you would only hear 3 cylinders at a time.

No sidepipes please... They are just as bad as louvers, if not worse. Unless they were integrated into the body, like side exit tips with concealed pipes.

That would be cool too. Probably more in keeping with the lines of the car. The problem still remains what to do with the rear end?

In certain states I think side pipes are illegal. The air has to exit behind the rear axle. I think this is for safety purposes. Otherwise, I think it looks good on certain cars but not the crossfire. I think it looks great with the center tail pipe. Why mess with perfection???

Scott instead of doing the side exhaust like the Corvette you could possibly do something like the SLR McLaren??? What do you think?

Actually I think the "legal" term for side-pipes is really "Off the road exhaust". I think the only "American" cars that came from the factory with them (already installed) were the Corvette and AC Cobras. Of course the AAR Cudas and TA Challengers of 1970 had tail pipes that exited in front of the rear wheel, and maybe a Mustang in the late 90's did too.
Pat, one way to take care of the rear view problem may be to "surgically" remove the two panels that boarder the existing tailpipes. Then fabricate an "air extractor" that's similar to the one on the latest Vipers and the Ford GT. Or you could relocate the license plate to the old tailpipe location, then come up with something "imaginative" to go between the tail lights.

Why mess with perfection? It's called customizing plain and simple. Some people like it, some don't. It's still a "relatively" free country, isn't it?

The original series Viper had side pipes with an exit in front of the rear wheels. The AAR 'Cuda and Trans/Am Challengers from the early '70s had those cool trumpet exhausts with exits in front of the rear wheels (man, I love those cars).

I'm with patpur on spoiling what I think is a gorgeous design of the back of the Crossfire. Hell, I waffled for along time about getting the Magnaflow exhaust because I thought it ruined the look of the trapazoid (or whatever ya call it) stock exhaust tips. Of course, with the sound I'm getting and the large oval tips of the Magnaflows, I'm perfectly content. Adding the spiffy little diffusors helped a lot too.

Duh... I've got a GTS sitting in my garage right now. In my defense, it's a 2nd generation Viper, (no side pipes) and I completely forgot about the previous roadsters with side pipes.
Just another "senior" moment I guess.
I forgot the 1965 & 66 Shelby GT 350 Mustangs as well. Their pipes exited in front of the rear wheel too.

I just don't think it works well with this car. Corvette or Viper... definitely. It works well with cars that have curves in the right place. I just don't see it on a Crossfire. As I said.... why mess with perfection. The back of the Crossfire was designed with the tailpipe and it looks great.

I will say this.... I dare someone to prove me wrong by showing a great picture of a Crossfire with side pipes.

I had a neighbor back in the late 70s that added side pipes on his vette. I seen too many burnt calves . And the ladies really had it bad if they wore nylon hose . Just something to think about

Anyone that would actually put side pipes on a Crossfire wouldn't have a woman getting in their car. Besides, if they did have a woman they would spend that money taking her out and not thinking about ways to make a beautiful car look ugly with side pipes

Some people say this is a free country. This may be America and you can do whatever you want to your car. But when you abuse that freedom given to us things tend to get out of control... and beautiful things start to look real "ugly". And just like Michael Jackson's face, once you mess with it a million times it will never ever look good again!

And once again we are all reminded of the Generation Gap, or should I say "Generations" Gap on this forum.
Opinions are one thing, criticizing and ridiculing people because they may have ideas that don't coincide with yours is simply uncalled for, even in fun.
One of the things that makes this forum so great, is the free exchange of ideas and opinions from all its members. But some forum members probably don't take part in many of the threads simply because they worry about remarks others will make about their comments.
The Crossfire means different things to different people. To some, it's perfect just the way it is, and there's nothing wrong with that. To other's it's a "blank canvas" just waiting to be modified by its owner.
Even the "Creator" has stated in interviews about his new Genesis design, that it was built with aftermarket suppliers, and owners modifications in mind. So do you think he would stifle anybodys creative juices when it come to the Crossfire? Even if it deviates from his original concept.

Thanks for your response The question was "would it be trashy?". I answered the question. If you don't want thoughts or opinions, don't ask for them. Just put the tail pipes on! At least that is what we do in my generation.

how about relocating the license plate to the factory exhaust location, then custom fabricating something like this in, like on the rear end of the Pagani Zonda

Actually it didn't work too well on the Viper, that's why they stopped doing it. It looked awesome, but due the firing order of the V10 it tended to sound like a UPS truck with a leaky exhaust manifold in the cabin. They were also able to squeeze more HP out of the Viper by routing the exhaust out the back.
