Hey guys,

Sorry to revive an old thread but I just wanted some opinions on brake squeaking.

I too was tired of the brake dust from the stock brakes and went with the Rotax Gold. I had Anthony (TVT Design) install the pads and they squeaked horrible. One week later I bought the Akebono and they also squeak still to this day. As soon as they heat up and at about 1/2 down on the brake pedal they squeak pretty loud. I just ordered some EBC Green Stuff hopefully to finally solve this problem.

Any ideas as to why two different sets of brake pads from brands almost no one has problems with would squeak on my car?

Thanks in advance for any reply.

Guzo, did you have the brake rotors turned on a brake lathe when you installed the Rotex Golds?

I just installed Rotex pads all around and they are whisper quiet, but I also had all 4 rotors turned to remove any glazing which cost less than $50.

I had installed Disc Italia's on my 04 XF with 29,000 miles on the clock and I love them very little dust and very quiet. My rotars at that point did not need turning.

Guzo,
Did they apply a good quality synthetic brake lube to the slides, slide contact points and between the backing plates and the pads??

at what point does one machine or replace the rotors? Is there a rule of thumb? Whats the average mileage ? Thanks.

Really depends on how you drive, traffic conditions and how you brake. For example, I have driven cars with OEM pads for over 150,000 miles before I had to replace pads and turn rotors. Likewise, I bought a Xfire with under 15000 miles and had to replace the rotors on all the wheels when I put on Rotex pads. So as you can see it is difficult to give you a valid average. Best thing to do is pull the wheel and take a look at the pads and rotors.

Rotors are replaced when they are too thin. Must use a brake mic to measure the thickness---1000ths of an inch, you can not see this with the naked eye. The pads are vibrating in the calipers to make the sound. To have ANY sound there must be a vibration. Shims or new caliper hardware or both will help. There is nothing special about your car---what is different is the install.

Thanks Hawkmonster and Jimmy.I shudder (no pun intended) to think what new rotors will cost me here!!!!! My front have quite a "lip" round the edge (about 1mm high),but no noise or performance probs (yet)! What do you think? Depending on price here,It may be better to get them there?

You just described the rotors I took off. When I tried to turn them they got too thin. Mercedes recommends that you replace and not turn them. Quality rotors on average cost about $ 50 to 75 installed. My rotors were also warped besides having the edges. Really can see the warp when you start to turn them on a lathe. Fronts tend wear faster then rears so you may get away with just fronts. Since I was doing the job I just replaced all 4 rotors and pads. Check Ebay for rotors.

Hi Badad,

Unfortunately with the 17% VAT there finding a good deal on new rotors may be tough. I'd try to have them turned first since you have nothing to lose if they can't do it without going too thin. Unless you have significant rotor wear you can probably get away with a "light turning". The idea is to get the glaze off the rotors so the new pads will seat in immediately.

I just put Rotex Golds on my SRT-6, and here are some pictures of the final assembly with freshly turned and painted rotors. It cost me less than $50 US to have them bead blasted and turned. In this part of North America there are issues with rotors getting rusty and seizing to the hubs, hence the blasting. When I reassembled them I used copper Anti-Seize on the mounting surfaces between the hubs, rotors, and wheels.

Cheers!
