Is the gear range different on a stick vs. an auto ?
I suppose there must be a slight difference since a manual has 6 gears and the auto has 5.
Although when driving my auto-stick alongside my friend Carol in her 6 speed Roadster ....at 80mph our rpm's were both exactly at 3000

Sixth gear in the manual and fifth in the Auto are so close you would not see any difference.
Gear Ratios - 6-Speed Manual Transmission
First 4.459
Second 2.614
Third 1.723
Fourth 1.245
Fifth 1.000
Sixth 0.838,

Reverse 4.062
Gear Ratios - 5-Speed Automatic Transmission
First 3.95
Second 2.423
Third 1.486
Fourth 1.00
Fifth 0.833
Reverse, 3.147/1.93

Gary, I can not speak for this instance, but if both cars (auto and 6 speed) are cruising 75-80, the stick is going to be about 400 RPM less, on average. Not a huge difference, but I do not really like to be above 3,000 when driving constant speed if I do not have to be, in my folks auto, you are above 3K at 80 and in my stick, you are not....

John,

I don't think you are comparing apples to apples. Look at 180's post of the ratios; they're only 0.005 different. Are you comparing your base Coupe six speed with over sized rear wheels and tires to your Moms "stock" automatic Roadster? If so then what you have effectively done is lower your final drive ratio by the percentage difference between the OEM stock tire size and what you are running.

When you say 80 miles an hour, is that at your speedometer or Moms? If it is yours that is also effectively lower than the actual speed by the same ratio. Go and put your Moms rears on you car and see if your car doesn't run about exactly what Gary is saying.

Physics of gearing don't change. You changed your final drive ratio that's why you are lower RPMs at the same reading on you speedometer, which is also lower than actual by the same ratio. Unless another user is running oversized 20's on their car they will not see the same numbers you are posting...

Just my 0.02.

Stay safe...

While you DO have a lead foot, I can testify that your car is FAST - and the manual I drove (admittedly, I dind't want to push it) just didn't seem as fast.

Sooooo a 6-speed or an auto is what we are down to! Which will it be???? Me personally I favor the auto-sticks, but that is just me, all the fun of gears without the hassell. Smooth transition, quick speed... yeah maybe a stick can hold the first and second gear longer, but a good auto driver, may give you a run for your money!!!!

So Mark will wind up with what he is most comfortable and happy with and either way... a good choice!!! IMO! Can't go wrong with whatever you choose with a Crossfire. I love them all!!
