Well, it's definitely a nice clutch! Picks up a lot quicker than my old one, and even though I only have a limited (keep kicking myself for not springing for an SRT-6), it still has better off-the-line acceleration with it.

Worth the $879?

I was waiting on a response from this dead thread for some time now.

Borhmian, you need to give us more info please . How does it drive, what does it feel like, how long to get it, the cost for the clutch, the cost for labor to get it done, any additional costs or things we should know, such as flywheel?

Sorry to have so many questions, but another member helped you get the clutch and I am hoping you can help us out so next time this happens to someone they know what to expect. I have yet to find another write up on replacing a clutch in this forum - this could be a very informative thread. Thanks in advance.

DarkHelmetRT started a new thread on the clutch I believe.

https://www.crossfireforum.org/forum...-1-clutch.html

I'm following both threads right now to find the information and details that nobody else seems to have for us. Hope that helps a little Boiler. Personally I'm still waiting for more now that the clutch is up and running.

Thank you, but I have been following that one for almost 6 months and still no answers. I think DarkHelemt may have been trying to sell his XF and then everything went dry, no new info. I have 60K and drive aggressively and when mine goes, I want to know what it is going to take and costs.

Borhmian, you are our last hope LOL

Yeah, sorry about that everyone.. I didn't know that anyone was waiting on information from me.. Suppose I should've kept up on it, but I didn't think anyone was following it. As for your questions Boiler, I'll do my best to answer them. Just as a note, these are all personal experiences.. I have no actual tests to confirm anything, just how I feel the clutch responds and such.

How does it drive? - Well, like I mentioned, it picks up much quicker than my stock clutch ever did. (not sure if this was because it was about to burn up, or not.. ) I had some decent acceleration to begin with, but once you find the optimal shift point (it moved slightly on me from my old clutch to the new one), she really flies off the line.

How does it feel? - Again, to mention the above post, it seems a quicker reaction time. Before, there was almost like a split second before the clutch engaged, now, it's almost instantaneous. Not sure anything else I can answer on this. If you think of anything in specifics, I'll def try to answer them.

How long to get it? - Umm.. This is relying on my memory.. Not including the ineptness of the dealership mechanics, I think it was around a month. And this was also to develop the prototype from scratch. Granted, I could be wrong, I don't really remember the actual times (I was so happy to have her back on the road, the wait kind of melted away, if you know what I mean!).

The cost for the clutch? - That's something you'll have to take up with DarkHelmet (assuming you can get a hold of him.. If you can't, I can always call, and let him know that we have some people interested in the clutch, and maybe get him back on here).

The cost of labor to get it installed? - OMFG... Don't even get me started on this... I actually ended up having my car towed out of the dealership and to a different place, because they were such retards.. I am never going back there.. Good place to buy a car, bad place to get it worked on.. They were utter failures. All in all, it isn't a lot of work to get done. I've downloaded the maintenance manual for our cars, and it's only maybe, 6 different pieces of equipment to unbolt, and a handful of things to disconnect, and it's done. They seemed to think it was rocket science or something.. All in all, I'm sure the 'cost' I put into it was more than was necessary..

I did end up having to purchase a stock flywheel, as well as.. ummm (damned memory) I believe it's like a throwout bearing, but called something a little different.. I don't remember the exact name, sorry guys. It's the Crossfire's equivalent. And the reason that we didn't go with a new flywheel is that DarkHelmet's R&D guys said it would take months of research, not to mention a significant investment of funds, and until we had enough interest, he wasn't going to pursue it.

Alright guys, I think that answers the questions. It's a solid clutch, with good performance. I don't have anything to compare it to, other than my old clutch, so hard for me to say if it's better or worse. I know that it's much better than my old clutch, and that I'm sure it stacks up well to what's on the market now. Please, feel free to ply me with as many questions as you want, and I'll see if I can give DarkHelmet a call tomorrow and let him know the interest that is still surrounding the product. I'm def here to help!

Borhmian,

You are the man, and more than likely, the only active member on here who has gone through this - so you are a wealth of info - Thank you.

I would be interested to see if SBC would still be interested in mmaking these for members, if they have made one, they should be fairly easy to reproduce. I have had conversations with DarkHlemet before (we met at Woodward last year) and if you would not mind PMing me his number, I could follow up so as not to inconvenience you.

One last question, as far as the stock flywheel and throw out bearing, how much were these parts from the dealer (if you do not mind me asking) and how many labor hours did it take the competent shop to do the full replacement?

THANKS!

Thanks Boiler, just glad to help out anyone else!

It's kinda disturbing that I'm the only active member that has gone through this.. Didn't think I drove her -that- hard.. But regardless of whether it was personal driving style, mechanical malfunction, or a combination thereof, if my experience helps someone, then glad to be of service.

Yeah, I can go ahead and PM you his office number. I don't have a home number for him, just the number for his shop. I doubt he'd mind, especially if you two have talked before. And yes, once it has already been done, it's easy to get done again.

Ok, so the three parts you need are a slave cylinder, a release bearing (I remembered the name!), and the flywheel. I don't remember exact prices, but the flywheel was around $850 - $900, I don't remember how much the slave cylinder was, and the release bearing was ballpark $300ish? Maybe $350.. I think those were the three that are needed.. You need a new release bearing and slave cylinder every time you do a clutch replacement, essentially, so those are pretty set prices. And again, the flywheel may be able to be engineered in the future, if we can drum up enough interest for it.

So labor hours total.. Well, I couldn't really be a decent judge on that. What with it taking them 5 freaking weeks to get my clutch out (yes, 5... >.>) and then dicking me around for 3 weeks before I finally said to hell with it and got it towed out of there.. I think with a dedicated mechanic, you could probably get the entire thing done in two days, maybe three tops. Possibly quicker, but I'm going to say that, just to be safe. Was looking at the manual again this morning, and I think that's easily do-able.

Well, if anyone else can think of anything else I can help with, please feel free to either shoot me a PM, or leave a reply on the thread! I def still check it, and sorry again that I didn't post this stuff earlier.

That is absolutely gorgeous... I've been trying to decide if I want to go with a clean black and chrome look or if I want to black it out. This has made my decision. Absolutely stunning! Nicely done sir

any details on the clutch, is it full faced, puck, sprung, unsprung, etc.
Torque capacity?
im hell bent on getting a new clutch while trying to stay as far away from spec as possible.

Sorry, infinite, I don't have those answers.. We'd have to try to get a hold of DarkHelmet for that. He said it was rated for 100 more hp than currently in my limited, but other than that, I'm not sure.

well clutches are rated by torque, if you could find out the info from him i'd greatly appreciate it. because at 100 hp over stock its only good for about an 80 ft/lb increase, which means i wouldnt even make it down the street. lol

Lol.. Fair enough. I was interested in calling him, actually. Boiler mentioned he wanted some more information about the clutch as well, but apparently, he dropped off the forums. Maybe I can give him a call over the weekend and get him to get back on here and answer the questions much more in-depth than I can.
