Launch Control
Just to see if it was true about the launch control feature, I tested.....although you can make it bounce above 4,200 RPMs.....it will hold & limit unloaded RPMs to 4,200 (6spd-clutch in).
Anyone explored what happens with the automatic?
Anyone ever hit the rev-limiter? If so, at what RPM does that occur?
I didn't actually launch it though, how many of you have actually launched a 6 spd at 4,200? How many have suffered damage doing so?

I'm pretty sure the 6 spd will pull to 6,000 in 1st thru 5th gear, you may be thinking about top speed in 6th....will only pull to about 5,750 rpm at 150 mph (box stock from factory -un modified).
Why am I curious about max launch RPMs.......Hummm......occasionally I've been known to drive in a brisk & irresponsible manner I suppose.

I would strongly advise against dropping the clutch from 4200RPM...multiple bad things will most likely happen...not to mention its useless...especially when you can break the tires loose in a 6spd just by engaging the clutch and mashing...
don't do it, for all our sakes.
I like the thinking here Chris, WHY NOT?? It is your car and if you want to risk replacing the clutch, who are we to stop you. I would also like to know of those who have actually done it and the results as well.....
And for the record, I would NEVER consider doign this to my car, but would still like to know the results.

I occasionally perform a 4,200 RPM launch at least 3-4 times a week for the past 2.5 years of owning my X-Fire. No mechanical breakdowns, but many set of tires have been sacrificed in doing so!!!
I did it a dragstrip. The third time it twisted the drivers side halfshaft in two and lodged the remaining piece of the halfshaft inside the carrier. I ended up replacing both. A tough lesson to be sure.
I do it some, very fun but it is useless. When I race I do it. Thats the only way I was able to beat an automatic mustang gt. But it hasnt caused any damage to anything other than the tires yet!!!

R&T must have used the 4,200 RPM drop clutch technique ....that's what they implied on the bottom of the test page & didn't report any damage....
No, the rev-limiter .....occurs some where up over 6000 rpms. What I'm talking about is the launch control feature....in stock form if I put in the clutch at a stop light & floor the gas pedal.....the engine will rev to 4,200 rpms & stay there!! The car will not allow an unloaded RPM level above that....(while the vehicle is stopped anyway). The magazines that tested the Crossfire when it first came out said this is the technique to achieve the best 0-60 time with the 6 speed. I tested it ....& yes....the rpms may briefly bounce over the 4,200 rpm level but very quickly.....stabilize at 4,200 & stay there till you drop the clutch.....which I haven't actually done yet.
I've never hit the rev-limiter in this car ....but I have in a Beretta GTZ 5 speed stick....just a total shut down till the rpms drop below the limiter setting.

This isn't a launch control feature, it's nothing more than a rev limiter. The autos and SRT's have them as well and on the SRT, it won't engage the SC so you know darn well it's not a "launch control" feature. I wish I could find a transmission harness so I could hack it up without looking back and figure out how to make a transbrake and positive shift controller so that it would just slam those solenoids open at 6200 everytime and just lock it up for a really hard and aggressive shift if you had it to the boards at tehe track. To many projects to work on right now. LOL
OK, so it's not a sophisticated "Launch Control"......it's an engine "Safety Feature"......in any case ....we have a couple of members (above) that have succesfully used it & a magazine.....and RUSH549 that had a disaster on his 3rd use of it at the track......he never came back on and said whether or not his car was modified.....
I guess we could just say the car comes with 2 rev-limiter settings, one when it's standing still & one when it's in motion (4,200 & @ 6,000 or so).
