Default Self-locking doors

Had an on experience on Saturday, it had never done this before. I had parked the car specifically leaving the door unlocked, and I'm outside it, keys on the table, when I heard the car chirp 3 times and all the doors lock. Thank goodness I didn't leave the keys in the car like I might have. So I unlock it, and about 10 minutes later, three chirps again. The next time I just unlocked it and lifted the gate.

Anybody have any idea why this did that? I did a search but didn't find anything on that issue. I had just literally an hour before that had the oil changed-they charged me $7.50 for the labor, I supplied the 0-40 and the filter. I thought that was a great deal. Anyway, they tested the battery and it registered a full charge with no issues. it's a 2006. Mark

From Owners Manual:
To Unlock the Doors: Press and release the unlock button on the key fob.

NOTE: If within 40 seconds of unlocking with the key

fob, neither door is opened, the key is not inserted in the
ignition switch, or the central locking switch is not
activated, the vehicle will automatically lock.

more owners manual:

The central locking switch also operates the automatic
central locking feature. With the automatic central locking
feature activated, the doors and rear liftgate/decklid
are locked at vehicle speeds of approximately 9 mph (15
km/h) or more; however, the fuel filler door remains
unlocked.
To activate this feature, turn the key to the ON/RUN
position and hold the upper portion of the switch for a
minimum of five seconds. To deactivate, turn the key to
the ON/RUN position and hold the lower portion of the
switch for a minimum of five seconds

Yes. This is a fairly common safety feature on most vehicles since the mid-nineties (probably a Fed thing). Doors automatically lock once the car hits about fifteen mile per hour. Not a bad idea.

Just in case you want to do something like a "mid air refueling".

Keep your airspeed up!

That's the rub though the first auto lock. I hadn't unlocked it with the fob. Turned the car off, the doors were unlocked and the keys were on the table. After that I can understand because I did unlock it with the fob and left the doors closed, so that one makes sense, not just the first one.

I do not lock my car when it is in the garage at home and quite a few times I have found it locked. I always guessed that I had somehow pressed the key fob or it was closed by a stray signal from somewhere else. Hmmmm?

yeah 180, that's what I've seen too, but only occasionally. Which is why i only keep one key in the car at a time. I just don't quite trust it to not auto-lock. It's weird. I also have the fob programmed to auto lock the doors above 15mph, which is a feature I really like.

Maybe mine locks itself because it wishes it was going down the road. Maybe this car is possessed, it reminds me of a movie so I shall call my car Christine

I tested that theory that the autolock doesn't work with the keys in the ignition. I have a 2008 coupe. I shut if off and left the keys in the switch. But I stayed in the car. It locked itself down. Don't get out of these cars and leave the keys in the switch. I would have been locked out by my own car.

It locked itself down because it knew you were in the car. You didn't get out and open the door (it has a sensor on the door). It thought you wanted to sit in the car parked with the doors locked.

The locking system of this car is very simple and smart. Not sure why nobody can understand it. I had trouble myself but figured it all out.

Try doing this... get out of your car and close the door. Hit the lock button. Then unlock it but DON'T open the door. I bet the car locks itself back down because it knew nobody opened the door.

Try locking the car with the door open. The pin on the door will only go down halfway. The door may look locked but it isn't.

The door won't lock itself if you get out of the car and simply close the door.

I kept thinking the door was locking itself until I realised how the locking system worked.

interesting. I will try these various options and see what happens. I will keep the 2nd key on me at all times, the other one will be tried in the ignition, and on the seat, and I'll see what happens. Perhaps when i did this on saturday it may have been one of those scenarios that I didn't put two and two together. Interesting, but bottom line is that I will make sure both keys are not in the car at the same time!!!!
