87 Octane Fuel

Did you see BoilerUpXFire's girlfriend. That guy is definitely not a flamer!

"I don't think he was meaning to flame you" would probably be a better way to phrase that.

I am cheap...although I prefer the term frugal...and have used midrange (89 octane) in my Audis and Crossfires since I bought them. That's 116k miles on the A6 and a total of 40k between the two 2005s. I have been blending 89 and 91 in the Crossfires, but since I am driving them so seldom and after reading these posts, I will stick with only premium from now on. As far as the A6, it is a lower compression engine than the 3.0 and 4.2 engines and at 153k miles, I think it is now used to midrange and if I was going to have a damaged engine, it would have happened by now. If it happens at 160k or 180k or 200k, who's to say it was the gas vs old age?

But it is taking its toll. Running lean, means running hotter, not in the sense your temperature gauge will show, but what the engine endures. These cars have a very good brain and they will compensate, that's why MB runs for so long...but it doesn't make it right, just makes it so so...a lot of people treat their car that way...its just a thing to drive until its time to try something else...but our toys, we seem to take better care of....so everyone is right on this one...just depends which side of the car lift you are on...

I use the 93 octane because I run high boost and run wide open a lot. If I were city driving and easy the motor would not see any big deal. But what if you choose to hammer it to get out of the idiots way, your going to have less timing and power when you did not expect it.
I was adding 3% oil to my truck last year to see if the mix had any effects, and it did not and the gas prices fell below 4$ per gallon. My truck has run fine and I was using the oil instead of spending time and gas to drop it off. My truck is not for performance. The test worked but it was a test for a few months never the less and not my crossfire that I depend on for performance.
I suspect that the 10% alcohol is bad enough and the synt. fuel people wanna get that number to 30% which will be an issue in the future. Less power and higher real cost plus lower corn for food uses??
You wanted responses, heck when I added a wooden spacer to the floor dead pedal to raise it up 3" to match the brake pedal I got lots of responses, Woody

It's all about the compression ratio. The car is smart enough to keep running without a hiccup but it was designed for the higher octane. If I recall, Vegas and Pintos used regular gas and the Mavericks with the Sporty add ons even used regular too. You could always get one of those babies!

Hi,
The Crossfire doesn't use the new, lastest engines such as the Ford design. I was referring to the engine in the Crossfire. The M112 was introduced in 1998 and although reliable and still a good design, it is a legacy high compression engine designed for premium fuel.

You won't notice a change in mileage with low octane fuel.
The problem you have in high octane fuels burn slower, increasing the detonation threshold. 87 burns fast, so fast it can cause detonation and pinging.
Back when we had the fuel shortage I was forced to put 87 in my crossfire. It absolutely hated it, It pinged, knocked, etc. It was horrible
Its also a really good way to inadvertently grenade a motor
