Now that you mention it, "RECOMMENDED" does appear - on the sticker that says "0W40 Mobile 1" under the hood. As I am doing my first oil change tomorrow, it's food for thought - next time, maybe I will go with 5W30 or some other Mobile 1 - or that Purple stuff.

GraphiteGhost: I don't think Boiler meant to flame you, he used terms like "in my mind" and the smiley. After spending a lot of time with him at the Dragon - I'd say that he doesn't come across as a "flamer" or know-it-all or anything like that.

Did you see BoilerUpXFire's girlfriend. That guy is definitely not a flamer! JK

"I don't think he was meaning to flame you" would probably be a better way to phrase that.

I wasn't gonnna say it, but now that you brought it up - Molly IS unnecessarily cute.

Yea, um, well, I offer a quantity of posts - still working on the quality aspect.

I am cheap...although I prefer the term frugal...and have used midrange (89 octane) in my Audis and Crossfires since I bought them. That's 116k miles on the A6 and a total of 40k between the two 2005s. I have been blending 89 and 91 in the Crossfires, but since I am driving them so seldom and after reading these posts, I will stick with only premium from now on. As far as the A6, it is a lower compression engine than the 3.0 and 4.2 engines and at 153k miles, I think it is now used to midrange and if I was going to have a damaged engine, it would have happened by now. If it happens at 160k or 180k or 200k, who's to say it was the gas vs old age?

But it is taking its toll. Running lean, means running hotter, not in the sense your temperature gauge will show, but what the engine endures. These cars have a very good brain and they will compensate, that's why MB runs for so long...but it doesn't make it right, just makes it so so...a lot of people treat their car that way...its just a thing to drive until its time to try something else...but our toys, we seem to take better care of....so everyone is right on this one...just depends which side of the car lift you are on...
Well said! My baby gets high octane and has a smooth **** (polished & waxed). Every time I walk by her in the garage I think, "Looking good babe!"

BoilerUpXFire, OK, I think I was just in a super grouchy mood when I posted the other day. Forgive me if I stepped on your toes, too. A little better now, in fact am feeling a lil bit off the weather from the change of weather and just getting my H1N1 shot.

Funny though, I was in the line to get my shot and filling out the paperwork they required, a question was 'what shot are you here for today' (write down the one from the list in the blank) so I wrote H1N1 and when I was finished, I had to bust out laughing. I asked the nurse if I was getting the hini shot and they all looked up at me (patients and staff alike). The nurse said no, it goes in your arm, and I showed her the form and said those guys who make those names for the viruses must have a sense of humor. By now, everyone was kinda laughing at me, until I said the word H1N1 looked like the word hini, hence my question. Like a wave, the lightbulbs went off in everyones head and they all got the joke. After that, I didn't have the heart to ask for my lollypop, but on the way to the car I wished I had one.

BoilerUpXFire, I hope we're , never want to carry forward and contribute to the hatred in the world today. Too much of that abounds as it is. I am human, and it does slip far too often. If there was a handshake icon, I would use about ten of them. For the record, in no way did anyone's post saying your married to a babe influence my apology. Nope, no way at all. Really, it didn't influence me for a second, half a second, 1/4, 1/8 or any fraction in between.....

I use the 93 octane because I run high boost and run wide open a lot. If I were city driving and easy the motor would not see any big deal. But what if you choose to hammer it to get out of the idiots way, your going to have less timing and power when you did not expect it.

I was adding 3% oil to my truck last year to see if the mix had any effects, and it did not and the gas prices fell below 4$ per gallon. My truck has run fine and I was using the oil instead of spending time and gas to drop it off. My truck is not for performance. The test worked but it was a test for a few months never the less and not my crossfire that I depend on for performance.

I suspect that the 10% alcohol is bad enough and the synt. fuel people wanna get that number to 30% which will be an issue in the future. Less power and higher real cost plus lower corn for food uses??

You wanted responses, heck when I added a wooden spacer to the floor dead pedal to raise it up 3" to match the brake pedal I got lots of responses, Woody

It's all about the compression ratio. The car is smart enough to keep running without a hiccup but it was designed for the higher octane. If I recall, Vegas and Pintos used regular gas and the Mavericks with the Sporty add ons even used regular too. You could always get one of those babies!

I agree, but must point out the misconception by some in the forum that the Crossfire 3.2L NA is a high compression engine. 10:1 compression is not uncommon by today's standards. There are quite a few vehicles out there that run on regular fuel that have higher than 10:1 compression. Example: Ford's newest version of its 3.0L Duratec V6 has 10.3:1 compression and regular unleaded is recommended. That engine puts out 240hp and 223 lb-ft torque. When aluminum engine blocks and heads are used the engine has the capacity to dissipate heat much better resulting in lower compression chamber pressures. The timing profile used by MB to obtain the claimed HP with this engine is what dictates the "requirement" for premium fuel.

Hi,
The Crossfire doesn't use the new, lastest engines such as the Ford design. I was referring to the engine in the Crossfire. The M112 was introduced in 1998 and although reliable and still a good design, it is a legacy high compression engine designed for premium fuel.

You won't notice a change in mileage with low octane fuel.
The problem you have in high octane fuels burn slower, increasing the detonation threshold. 87 burns fast, so fast it can cause detonation and pinging.

Back when we had the fuel shortage I was forced to put 87 in my crossfire. It absolutely hated it, It pinged, knocked, etc. It was horrible

Its also a really good way to inadvertently grenade a motor
