Extended warranty
Extended warranty
I am scheduled to have my transmission replaced later this week. This has me considering purchasing a DC extended warranty. My definition of that is a plan for a set period of years and/or miles to cover warrantable items as listed in the DC Service Contracts website, excluding wear and tear items and routine maintenance, with deductibles ranging from $0 to $100.
Has anyone purchased this from your dealer and, if so, was your pricing negotiable? I thought I saw some posts with prices in the $900 - $1500 range but am not sure of the years or miles in your extra coverage. (They were quoting me approx. $1800 for the DC Maximum Care Plan with 7 yrs/70,000 miles and a $100 dedcutible.)
I understand this may not be necessary and is another way for them to get $$ but given the tranny problem, it's worth my consideration.
Thanks in advance. Still thrilled.

I got mine from DC. Bumper to Bumper 7yrs-70k, $50 deductable for $1,800. I had the extended warranty on my '97 Cirrus and @ 68k the tanny went. They had to totally rebuild it. That cost me $50. Then a week later the A/C compressor locked up. Again $50 and I was on my way. Combined, those repairs alone would have cost me around $ 2,400.
Now you look at all the electronics in the Crossfire and just covering the drive train for 7yrs - 70k didn't make good sence to me. What can I say... I would rather spend a couple bucks now and have peace of mind.
I plan on keeping this car for quite a while. But if I do decide to sell it the warranty is transferable.
The price tag on this car was cheap (relative to MB prices or what I paid for my last Vette) but the maintenance has MB prices. Not Chrysler prices.

I normally do not purchase extended warranties, but since this was a "first year" model it made sense to me.
I bought the 7/70 extended warranty with $100.00 deductible that starts after the basic 3/36 warranty has expired. It covers the major items, except tires, brakes, wipers, and fluids. You are also supposed to get a free rental car while repairs are being done, up to $30.00 per day.
I pulled the bill of sale to check the price. It was $1,290.00, when purchased at the time of sale of the car.
There was never any mention of any other plan to me about oil changes or any other deductible amounts.
I also plan to keep this car at least 7 years, so I think it is a good deal.

If you plan to keep the car, the price for the extended warranty really isn't that unreasonable, especially since it is transferrable.
A car is a pretty large investment, especially if you're not handy with repairing cars or understanding how to go about diagnosing a car's problems.
Just remember that the 7/70 extension doesn't cover soft trim, which didn't include a pretty major repair that my previous 300M had. I had a problem with my power window and apparently the part that broke was considered a soft trim part. Repair was substantial in cost but my dealership paid for it even though it wasn't covered, the owner called it "customer retention cost".
There are good dealerships out there

I have no idea how the dealer came up with that price. It was simply quoted to me and after a few minutes to think about it, I said yes. There was no price negotiation on this item at all.
Actually, there was no price negotiation on the vehicle, except that I laughed at the $3K "add on" over sticker price, which was removed as soon as they realized I was serious about the purchase, and the trade in price of my 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse. I asked for $10.9K, they said $9K. We finally settled on $10.5K I only agreed, because I knew it needed a set of tires...

I purchased the 7/70 Master Care Plan (most extensive warranty) with $0 deductable at the time of original purchase due to the Crossfire being a 1st year vehicle. I asked the dealer if he would sell it for $900. We agreed on $985.
It appears that there is significant mark-up in these plans allowing each dealer significant room to negotiate. Since I also purchased the vehicle under an employee discount program, I don't feel that the profit was buried in the price of the car.
Negotiate! It never hurts to ask.
