with reverse, that is how it should be. always engage while it is stopped.

Owners manual say that even reverse has a synco.

From the service manual......
The manual transmission is a fully synchronized two-shaft transmission with six forward gears and one reverse gear. The 6th gear is used to save fuel and reduce engine speed. The manual transmission is equipped with a
conventional dry clutch with automatic wear adjuster which is operated by a central clutch operator. The transmission is maintenance-free and has a permanent oil fill. A precise and light shift with short shifting travels is achieved by the following measures:

²
Transmission of the shift lever movement to the transmission by the shift rod and control cable

²
Central shift shaft supported on needle bearings

²
Multiple-cone synchronization in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th gear

² Fully-synchronized reverse gear

Regardless of what the manual says, think of whats happening mechanically. When rolling backwards your output side of the transmission is rotating in the opposite direction to the input side (engine input shaft).

Therefore have some mechanical sympathy and engadge reverse with the vehicle at rest.

Been driving stick shift cars, and big rig trucks for 55 years, respectfully, and the one thing you learn first off=you always shift into reverse, and first gear from a complete stop, in a car, trucks differ in some ways

I will agree with you, that's the right thing to do. But I have had a couple of occurences where I've been rolling backwards and shifted into reverse. No grind from the gear set I have heard....(Yoda)

If you happen to have the gears spinning just right, maybe, but normaly there would be an interference just because of the ratios involved. It is easier mechanicaly to enter any gear but reverse in the situation. In many older trannys, if you do this, you can blow the master cluster.

Reverse, always done at rest, full stop.
